The 10 Best "Found Footage" Movies

I've created a list of the ten best movies from the "found footage" sub-genre, and I've created a podcast episode over at the Shaun Talks Movies website discussing it. Check it out at the link below:

http://www.shauntalksmovies.com/episodes/2015/4/16/shauns-top-10-found-footage-films-1

What are some of your favorite movies from the found footage genre?

reply

Holy *beep* There are 10 movies like that crap? They really need to "invent" a new "genre" to make the fanboys squeal because this is getting old and it was already old after Blair Witch.

For every lie I unlearn I learn something new - Ani Difranco

reply

It's just like any other genre. There are good found footage movies, bad ones, and everything in between. The genre was around before Blair Witch but it popularized it.

Great:

Cloverfield
Chronicle
Project Almanac, didn't do well but I don't care. It was a fun movie.

Good:

Blair Witch
Quarantine
V/H/S

Mediocre:

Paranormal series
Earth to Echo
Alien Abduction

Bad:

Project X. I loathe this movie.

reply

Loved Project Almanac. Chronicle is way over rated.

reply

The original spanish version of quarantine would be under the great category

reply

I've heard good things about it but haven't seen it.

I'll probably check it out sometime but I mainly just watch horror movies around Halloween.

reply

Yes, [REC] as it was called in the original is a classic. The sequel not bad either. The third one? Nonsense. The fourth and last made a noble attempt to get ack to the feel of the first two but it was too late.

reply

There was a fourth?!?! Genesis was so awful I'm shocked they were able to make another one.

reply

Project X is a guilty pleasure of mine

reply

Me too. I thought it was hilarious.

Milk...it does a body dead

reply

10 you ask? More like about 200+! Most are complete POS that use the format because they could not afford a real shoot. Some transcend their limitations but rarely ever get to the level of a "Cloverfield" or a "[REC]".

reply

Afflicted

reply

Agreed with Afflicted, good movie!
Also Tunnel (2011) is pretty good

reply

all time great found footage

1) REC
2) Blair Witch Project
3) Chronicle
4) Cloverfield

reply

This would be my ranking for best found footage movies as well, spot on.

reply

Please list your top 10 because there are many of us who won't bother to click the link.

As for my opinion, Trolljegeren (2010) & V/H/S/2 (2013) are a couple of the best ones.

And I only know three chords! Ha ha ha ha

reply

"Quarantine" was a good found footage movie. "Cloverfield" is meh.

reply

My favorites are REC 1 and 2, Cloverfield, Dyatlov Pass, The Bay, Europa Report and Unfriended.

The link is not working.
I really enjoyed As above, so below, it was really creppy. Also Cloverfield of course, The Conspiracy(this one genuinely scared me), Quarantine, Rec 1 and 2, VHS 1 and 2, The Last Exorcism, Undocumented, The Possession of Michael King, Home Movie, The Fourth Kind, Chronicle, Afflicted, Evidence (2012), The Tunnel, Noroi, Devil's Pass.

reply

Nobody has mentioned Cannibal Holocaust, from 1980. Probably not worthy of the top ten, but it's the earliest found footage film I'm aware of.

Thit and thpin!

reply

Cannibal Holocaust is my #1, although I can see why many won't be interested in it.

reply

Exists was decent.
