I'd say you have garbage taste, but with the caveat of "with a high rating" as qualification for this list, I'd say the whole exercise has little worth altogether. Doesn't even tell us anything about you, except you may be a troll. Just a waste of time. The only way to improve the project is to counterpart it with a list of movies you feel are justified with their high rating, but it's better to evaluate them individually and express yourself coherently with actual analysis.

You are right in order to be better understood I must make a list with movies that I do like. Here are my 10 best movies from the 2010s:

I will come up with an IMDb list at some point

And this is another post I list some of my favorite movies, I don't remember the title of the post, it has been deleted: https://moviechat.org/general/General-Discussion/64e51d8cfe0556242d5b80af/deleted?reply=64e641409ca8854609ae28a7

Okay, that settles it. Your taste isn’t awful. Surprised you like Interstellar but find 2001 overrated. I agree Interstellar is better and far more sophisticated, but cinema-goers need to crawl before they walk or run. Most films are rated as being of their time, and in 1969 with decades of ridiculous sci-fi on cheap sets with no logic behind the stories, 2001 A Space Odyssey must have been seen with an extraordinary amount of suspense, realism and philosophy for the audiences of the era.

I might make a similar case for The Shining coming during the build-up of by-the-numbers slashers with bad acting, and over-the-top gore. Perhaps it elevated the genre, and other horror like Poltergeist might have tried likewise to stand out from the pack.

There was also a time where earlier Star Wars was quite respectable before we were oversaturated with saga after saga, and video games, of increasingly mediocre quality. I grade The Empire Strikes Back, for instance, easily an 8 or 9 out of 10… with the mindset of the child I was who grew up watching it on VHS in the 80s. It was great because there wasn’t a whole lot of sci-fi fantasy sagas to seriously challenge it—so it was a total game-changer.

I understand that they vote those movies with nostalgia the number one factor, but even as a kid I didn't like star wars neither star trek so nostalgia isn't a factor for me, and I see 8 stars and 9 stars and I get mad so I evaluate the movies for what they really are. Do I want to re-watch that movie with 9 stars rating? NO, 5 stars from me

There’s nothing wrong with your personal taste… it’s authentic to you, and that’s great. I often wonder, however, if viewers are being a little too egocentric in their appreciation of film. Perhaps you are doing so, with many others here certainly doing likewise.

For instance, let me suggest the case of Citizen Kane. I’ve seen it three times over the years. I probably won’t feel the need to rewatch again, and I certainly don’t need to own a copy. It doesn’t really strike a chord with me that much! However, I have no problem declaring it a 10/10, as one of the greatest films of all time. The reason? Look at how much care and thought was put into it. See other films from the early 40s, a pretty straightforward time with formulaic movies, and you recognize how far ahead of it’s time it was. Orson Welles directorial debut contains a solid character study, dreamlike sequences, surrealism, non-chronological storytelling, a MacGuffin, a sort of twist-ending, perfect performances. Obviously influential and novel stuff that would still be seen that way 60 years later in modern works by filmmakers such as Nolan and Aronofsky, let alone 1941.

Point is, grade cinema as a proper artform and put bias aside. I may not want to hang up a work by Picasso above my fireplace, but I would be foolish of me to say that must mean he’s overrated and one of the worst painters of all time as a result.

The universe doesn’t revolve around me.

WELL SAID.

Don't bother. List ends with the shining and 2001!

Yes, some of the worst movies in history

I'd love to hear your reasonings for Amadeus. Didn't know it was possible to dislike that movie.

To tell the truth I wasn't able to finish that movie, I gave up in the middle, so it's possible to turn out a good movie after all. But what about the rest of my list? Do you agree with the borefest I listed?

reply

I agree with some of the movies on your list. LA Confidential has always been overrated. Suspiria was boring too. The bad Star Wars movies for sure. The Huntsman movie sucked balls and I didn't think many people enjoyed It Chapter 2. Cant say I agree with most of the rest.
