My general thoughts (spoilers)

1). I think the movie overall was decent, C+. A lot of the negative reviews against the film are provoked by a general tiredness with found footage movies, not a specific criticism against this film. I like found footage movies, so I didn’t enter the movie predetermined to hate it, as the critics did

2). The biggest flaw in the movie is that some parts are too explicit and corny. The ending, for example, shows the demon driving a car, which appeared more comedic than horrifying.

3). The best scares in the film were subtle. Perhaps the best scene in the film is when the characters talk to the postal worker, who said “Those guys aren’t Amish.” At that moment, you could feel a sense of uneasiness.

4). I appreciate the way the movie allowed the protagonists to survive. The black guy was quite brave to enter the hole to save his girl, and as a result, I feel he (and his girl) deserved to live. If any protagonist had to die, the big dude was the right one

I liked it as well. It was much better than anything after part 3 (I still want a proper part 4 to tie up Katie's story).

The main thing that took me out of it at times, were the music and sounds during jump scares and certain other scenes. Also near the end when Margo is talking to her "Mom" and it switches from found footage to an actual movie scene.

Aside from that the movie was decent. Good pacing along with an unsettling atmosphere. I was hoping (I didn't even watch any trailers so I went in blind) that the cult would tie into Grandma Lois' cult. Maybe in a future installment.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, this cult was trying to suppress the demon....where as Grandma Lois made a de with Toby. Polar opposites, disregard my idea lol

The atmosphere helped a lot. But yes, driving off in the car was a bit odd. Sets up a sequel though.

Also putting Margot below her mother's room, has some more meaning when you know what they were planning.

Could/would Margot have done more research though, and found out the darker nature of the community?

When Samuel takes Dale off on the horse, they suddenly get way too much time to see the church and all of that area. Would nobody else be on guard? Or did they not care, knowing they were going to kill them all soon anyway?
