Is Russell predominantly Asian, American or Hawaii?

It matters not one jot. He is a kid who befriended and melted the heartbroken old man.

Born in America, I assume. Has some Asian or Hawaiian blood to him.

He's actually 100% full-blown Mexican

I thought he was Asian.

Here we go again, no one here in IMDb likes Asian subjects. Even Brandon Lee isn't Asian! This thread will be deleted soon by the chosen ones (moderators). That's Hollywood for you.

My wife and I justed watched this film. She didn't see Russell as Asian, which is odd, since she'll speak Korean to the correct people, japanese to the correct people and 3 different chinese dialects to all the right people. I am not that worldly as to "know" which greeting to use based solely on facial features and the way people dress.

Now I assumed Russell was at the very least, of Asian-American heritage, based on his facial features and especially the very specific ways they chose to depcit his eyes as having an Epicanthic fold. I never doubted he was anything but a sweet, American kid with a high drive to earn merit badges and an adorable gentle love for animals.

However, I would like it if Pixar never answers the question because then it is a non-issue.

For those wondering what I was talking about regarding his eyes:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicanthic_fold

Just remember the line from the article above: "There are various factors that influence whether someone has epicanthic folds, including geographical ancestry, age, and certain medical conditions........Epicanthic folds occur in East Asians, Southeast Asians, Central Asians and some South Asians, Indigenous Americans, some Arabs, the San people, Berbers, Inuit, and occasionally in Europeans (e.g., Scandinavians and Poles)."

I was just watching that Finnish film BIG GAME and the kid in that film has Epicanthic folds and he's Finnish, most likely of Saami ancestry. Europeans can have them too, as do some people of Turkic ancestry. Many of these folks have immigrated to the USA and Canada and often on these boards, we see discussions about actors and actresses who are clearly of European descent but have "asian" looking eyes. So, I'm just saying, this is a feature found all over the world, even in Africa. So.. who knows?

Russel is Russell and he's one neato kid!

^^I saw that kid in 'Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale'. Many Finnish people do look like that.

You know, we watched the end again and kept going back to the very brief moment when we are shown Russell's mom - she has dark hair and similar eye shape, suggesting that yes, Russell is an Asian-American kid. Also, in going back further to the scene when Rusell pulls of his scout cap, we see he has very dark, very straight hair and with his cap off, it seems more evident.

However, Pixar doesn't like to dwell on such things - they just include them and let the viewer interpret the visual however their mind works.

I still stand by what I said and that is, it really doesn't matter what his ancestry happens to be even so, I understand the curiosity people have. I just think it's a good step that Pixar would depict such a kid and choose NOT to address it via dialogue or some backstory explanation. Russell is simply Russell.

I agree with your assessment. Keep in mind that Russell's real voice-actor is also an Asian-American kid. I guess they cast him for a reason too. For me, Russell's character is just one bubbly American kid regardless of his ethnicity.

MovieMob - glad you agree and even happier that Pixar cast an Aisan-American kid to voice the actor and STILL they never ONCE mentioned his ethnicity or tried to explain it. Now THAT is the way the world should be. We see people, we might wonder, maybe even ask politely, but no more do people feel they HAVE to explain where some grandparent came from - we all Americanz now! (at least if you ARE American... if ya catch my drift!)

Peace Out and Party On Russell! (His next badge should be in Puppy Daycare by the looks of the end credits)

That's a really weird question considering that American is a nationality, not an ethnicity or race. There are Americans who aren't white.

When I first saw the kid in the movie, I thought he was Asian. Also, the voice is done by an Asian, so I'm guessing he's supposed to be Asian. Not that any of it matters though.
