Carl and Ellie's Baby

Carl and Ellie's baby died. The movie never shows if the baby was a boy or girl. I don't know if the baby was stillborn or died after it was born alive. They visited the baby's gravesite. There are usually no gravesites for babies who died due to a miscarriage.

Just watching the movie now. Could you please let us know when in the movie that they visited the 'babys gravesite'?

My understanding was that they were probably told that they couldn't have a baby, maybe even a miscarriage.

But some parents have had their babies from miscarriage either buried or cremated. At least I've heard that from many on the grieving sites I belong to.

Stillborn baby? Visiting grave? I don't recall this. As the other posters said, I'm pretty sure they didn't have a baby, either they had a miscarriage and/or were told they couldn't have babies.

This is my signature.

reply

I assumed they had a miscarriage.

reply

Yeah, there was no "visiting the gravesite" at all....Ellie was infertile.

reply

The way that I understood it was that Ellie was pregnant so they started decorating the nursery then she had a miscarriage that led to her being unable to have a baby.

reply

I think she was pregnant and either had a miscarriage or stillbirth.
I say this because most couples do not start decorating the nursery until after they found out they were expecting a baby.

Also Ellie was pretty distraught at the hospital. I doubt that she would have taken it that hard if the doctor just told her she couldn't have children.

They did a whole lot of preparatory decoration for things they *planned* to do, such as going to South America. The beginning of the movie is about hopes and plans, some of which were delayed (breaking the travel money jar to pay for unexpected expenses, etc.).

They sit on the hill top, one sees a baby in the cloud, then the other points out lots of babies, as if this could (should) be so in their future. Becoming parents was their plan, and they prepared for it occurring, but it was not an actual event that almost happened but that ended in a miscarriage and infertility.

reply

First off, they didn't visit any gravesight. Second, there are babies with gravesights that died pre-birth. Third, it doesn't matter what the gender was.

I just assumed she had a miscarriage that left her unable to conceive. She looked really devastated. I don't think she would be that devastated if the doctor only told her she couldn't conceive.

And also, just because they didn't show a grave-sight doesn't mean it never happened. Some thing don't have to be explained. That would just be over explicit, I think. They don't need to hammer it in.

She could have learned through the miscarriage that she was unable to conceive. I don't think it's important to the story, but there's a myriad of things it could have been. As far as the effect on the female psyche, many women - right or wrong - view it as an inability to do the one thing on this planet that women are supposed to do, conceive and give birth. Each woman handles the emotional toll differently, but Elle's was not an uncommon one.

Agree with you on the gravesite bit. For the purposes of the story, the only thing you need to know is that the baby died.
