Casting was almost there..

I must admit that the casting for this film was quite good. It was the script and the characterization that ruined it. If this movie was played up more seriously and truer to the comics, I think a lot of fans would of been happy with the cast overall. Sure there were better and more popular actors to fit into the roles, but they picked a decent enough group and I can see it in my head a better film with these actors if someone in the production gave a *beep* about the property they had.

Agree or disagree?

Overall, yes I agree. I know I will be in the minority, but I was not too crazy about Doctor Who (sorry, can't think of his name right off hand and I am too lazy to look for it) being Destro. He just didn't come across as a good Destro at all. That's just my opinion, though. I wouldn't even mind seeing him in another role, as he is a great actor, but just not as Destro. Also, I think everyone is unanimous in thinking the worst casting choice was Duke, Channing Tatum. The guy is from my home town, but he sucks as an actor! I also wouldn't mind seeing Marlon Wayons NOT be in the film, but maybe he would be alright as a real GI JOE character and not some amalgamation used for comic relief.

But yes, they screwed up the characterizations quite badly. That is what sank the film.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I'd agree with both of you here. Eccleston doesn't have the physical presence necessary to portray a convincing Destro, while Tatum gave off his usual "street thug" aura rather than Duke's "All-American Hero" vibe.

I also wasn't thrilled with the *international* flavor of the team - G.I. Joe has been about American Special Forces since the 1960's. Changing it now to bump up ticket sales or make it more "PC" is lame.

Otherwise, the casting was really good. The choices for the Baroness, Scarlett, Snake-Eyes, Stormshadow, Cobra Commander, etc., were terrific. Their talent just got wasted on material that in no way reflected 25+ years of "Real American Hero" characterizations or mythology.

Oh, and Ripcord isn't black. Stalker? Black. Alpine? Black. Roadblock? Black. Heavy-Duty? Black. Iceberg? Black. Hardball? Black. Junkyard? Black (and Brown). Ripcord? Whitey McWhite-White.

You know, Eccleston excited me to see him play the character (probably becuase he was a "name" actor and could of done Destro justice), but then the production screwed it up. Tatum has the appeal of a wet sock to me. He isn't even good looking enough to keep getting work.

The international thing drove me nuts, not only for the obvious reasons, but only two were international. Breaker and Heavy Duty... was this because the actors couldn't do an American accent so suddenly we need to make the team international?

Here is my complaint with Ripcord, race issue aside, but couldn't they at least make him a paratooper and not a pilot wannabe? Why not make him Ace? Or Wild Bill? Another blatant "we know nothing of the characters or property in which we are making this movie about".
