Good LORD, the most baffling movie I've ever seen. ***SPOILERS***
There is something seriously schizophrenic about this movie. I can't wrap my head around it. There were some genuinely funny moments, and usually I like Kate Hudson (and I mostly liked her in this movie) but it never seems to really establish its own story here. One moment Dane is being an *beep* then he's the nice guy- fine, he fell for her, I'll let it slide. But she was all over the place! Her character and her personality was never really defined at all. First she seemed slightly arrogant, but certainly confident of herself, and a little bland. Then it turns out she has only slept with two guys, so now she's drunk and at first seems like she's into this messed up date, but then in the bathroom she tells the roommate that he's an *beep* Massive wtf moment there, thought I'd missed several somethings somewhere. So then she still wants to sleep with him, (OK, she's experimenting, fine.) so now he's getting more into her, but she only wants a casual relationship. Then appropos of nothing, she's suddenly in love with him, despite not having wanting him to sleep over not too long ago.
That, and several times I was just puzzled by how they decided to set up certain shots (Dane crying over some movie or something shot from the side awkwardly, could've been much funnier from a different angle), the goth chick in Cheeses Crust shouting how "you people shouldn've thought of that before you stopped my mother going into the clinic" was framed so weird, almost like it was an afterthought. Seemed as if they hadn't realized she was going to say something particularly funny so they didn't think it was necessary to set up a proper shot of her. I don't know, it was just weird and awkward. The editing also, could've been done SO much better. When Dane first "meets cute" with Kate and comes back with her number, it could've been set up much better for that pay off- he didn't say a word to her, which was already kind of weird, then to just cut away? Just didn't gel.
That's the thing- I actually kind of enjoyed this movie, and there were plenty of genuinely funny moments, but the thing felt weird and mishmash and dank, like a house with windows facing away from the good light and wood panelled walls with a too low ceiling. Just, unsettling.
Joe, I can categorically say that you are not a bigger banana-head.
