Why is Alec Baldwin in this?

He just felt so out of place....They could have saved quite a bit on screen time not having him in this. He had what? Ten minutes and was portrayed as some womanizing professor? He was not convincing and when he delivered the line "I banged a lot of women in my time" I couldn't help but roll my eyes. I always skip through the scenes with him because I feel they contribute nothing to the storyline. He comes in about mid-film for some pointless consultation with his son. What does everyone else think? Also think Kate Hudson was hugely miscast...Definitely not a girl worth putting what he went through. Mediocre looks, bland and vapid personality...Minus those two things I thought it was decent.
