Other than the last 10 minutes, this film really wasn't scary?

Admittedly the scene in the penthouse was pretty terrifying. But until then, all the "scares" were just people in zombie makeup screaming overly loud and running at the camera. This kinda makes me think the movie is overrated as a whole, in terms of how frightening it is. Anyone agree? I thought the low budget Australian film "The Tunnel" (its on youtube, highly recommended) was a lot more consistently frightening than REC

I totally agree with you. I suppose the atmosphere at times was creepy but not as intense as I was led to believe prior to watching it... Maybe that's just me though. I also have to agree with you on the last 10 minutes.
I was like "Hey, this movie ain't that scary :/", until they reached the penthouse, Then I knew *beep* would go down! ha.
The little boy (whether or not intended to be a jump scare) didn't really scare me but it was just the creepy appearance of the girl at the end and just the whole religious underlying theme...
The fact that I didn't feel as scared throughout the film, I think really caught me off guard with the last scene which made it a hundred times scarier, so in a way I think it was a well made movie...

I totally agree with you! Right up until the minute they got into the penthouse, I thought it was just bloody, people eating other people's faces off gore. No different then what always seems to pass for horror these days.

SPOILERS:

When they discovered the newspaper articles and the reel to reel, that's what I found interesting, too bad they waited until the end of the movie to get to that. The last 10 minutes with the possessed girl were the only scary part for me.

Same exact deal here. Actually, it got scary for me right BEFORE they got into the penthouse, when the last fireman dude was gone and they looked down the steps and see tons of zombies looking up at them. But yeah, everything got ratcheted up in the penthouse. It was a surprising twist for the movie to take.

Same here. Basically a chaotic zombie movie -- until the penthouse scene.

...yes...just fast forward the first hour and watch the final 10 minutes.

It's more enjoyable that way 😀
