Speaking for Sweden, only family movies get dubbed - because, you know, CHILDREN are meant to watch them. Everything else is subtitled.

But it's funny you should say that. We would never remake a movie for adults just so the audience wouldn't have to read text. You did get Quarantine, unless you somehow missed that. Essentially the same damn movie but in your language.

It´s like that in some countries. Like in Spain, it´s horrible, what you hear and what you see never fits and you never learn anything.

In my country they only dub childrens programs and some animated films (the english versions is always shown and that´s the one the grown ups go to).

That's mostly Germany you're talking about. Those lunatics will dub anything they get their hands on. Here in the Netherlands we never ever dub. Dubs would ruin everything and nearly all people here understand English anyway. I'm actually annoyed by Dutch subtitles in movies and tv because they are distracting.

Not in Portugal which is ,maybe, the last or one of the few countries in Europe that subtitles movies and let viewers listen the original audio.

It's not JUST Americans who don't like subs. Dubbing is done all around the world. I hate dubbing though. But I'm a language geek and love listening to the different languages. But for some people, watching a film is relaxing and not everone can relax when reading subtitles.

Ugh, that does sound annoying.

I teach at a language school and we have some American students in the school trying to learn German. They complain that the teacher doesn't speak enough English in the class and that most of the class should be in English (even though most of the class is made up of other nationalities)

The point would be that Hollywood has to ruin everything.

Remaking a movie only a year after it was released, sigh...more less the same happened with Let The Right One In and A Tale of Two Sisters. As far as REC goes, the remake, Quarantine...is one o the worse movies I've ever seen.

Remaking a film isn't just about changing the language and other cultural differences to suit Hollywood, I would think that PROFIT is a huge part of it too.

When was the last time Hollywood/America actually brought out an original and/or good horror film? I can't even remember. They have no creativity anymore, so when other countries come up with an original horror movie, they don't want to miss out on all the profit it will make, thus they remake it.

There are a lot of rabid movie fans here, including myself, who love seeing foreign films and have no issues with subtitles. Then there's the general public that doesn't want to mess with subtitles. It's not hard to understand that. They just want to be entertained for a few hours. It's a money-making business so Hollywood remakes a film for the American public to consume based on the original foreign film. Yes, they Americanize the film because it's being sold to that market. I don't think it's a big deal and don't understand why folks elsewhere should get upset about what Americans are watching in their own country for entertainment. The original films usually still make it over here and get seen by those of us here who care and appreciate them. With that, I feel REC is way better than Quarantine. I had imported the DVD from the UK a year or two ago and loved it. I also enjoyed REC2.
