Scene on a beach
Where flashbacks took part? The place is just amazing, is it a Great Britain shore? Also part when grown up Joe comes to a beach in first part of a film.

shareIn the extras they said it was in South Africa. Great village by the shore.
shareyeah, they used south africa because its usually much sunnier there than england, and they wanted the flashbacks to be sunny cause they said that memories are always better than they actually were
sharethe water is calmer, the ocean scenes were fantastic with a beach you could actually walk out onto without catching hepatitis or breaking an ankle. "Joe" walked out into the water and floated for a bit while he reminisced, can you imagine doing that on an English beach?:-)
shareI think that the beach scenes set in California were filmed in South Africa. There's something about the quality of the light which did not seem right for America.
The scenes in the flashback are more tricky. I think they could have been filmed near a Kent beach. It does seem extraordinary that houses could have been kept in a condition which would have seemed dowdy 35 years ago but my father thought there may be houses like that near Whitstable.
I am interested in films set on southern beaches in Britain.
Sarah Onions.
You're so right about the quality of the light.
I'd say almost the entire movie was shot in South Africa. And beautifully so!
Did you notice the actors squinting at the sun in many of English scenes, even though it was often early/late in the day? Well, the first thing I notice when arriving in South Africa from the UK is the brightness and harshness of the sun. Also Africa's red soil, which can be picked up in the movie.
I would imagine California's light is similar but evidently not quite the same.
Interesting that we noticed the same aspect!
