The lipsync scene

That has to be on the most perfect pieces of cinema I've ever experienced. Talk about getting lost in the moment. I have no doubt that Joe's letter with the song lyric is what caused older Ruth to break down at the end, she remembered this scene and what could have been.

reply

Yes! I loved this scene, and surely it sent a flood of memories to Ruth as she read the song lyric.

The lipsync scene and the connection to the scene with the letter at the end is just awesome. Loved it! If There is Something by Roxy Music was the perfect song for this..

reply

Yes, we all agree that this scene was THE moment of the film. Truly magical!

reply

Ha that film introduced me to that Roxy Music song and the awesome Felicity Jones, amazing sequence

I am now a checkerboard chick!

reply

thats gotta be the WORST lipsync scene, with intention of bonding i have ever seen.....

How did they even fall in love?

PS. if you want bonding check out Running With Scissors, not much lipsync but a real connection in another mad movie

reply

It's an excellent, tasty scene.

Fabulous tune, wonderful way to represent a fond 'memory' from his youth, great emotional resonance, and nice tie-in, within plot context.

Love it!

Did anyone notice that the scene is shown in slow motion, but Ruth's lips stay in synch with Bryan Ferry's vocals when she's singing along? It's an interesting trick, whereby you film the action at 3 times normal speed, whilst playing the song back in the studio at a similarly faster speed. On the set, Roxy Music probably sounded more like The Chipmunks as they were shooting that scene.

are you sure the lipsync was perfect.....I cannot see why any director would waste funding on such a trick noone will notice?

reply

<<are you sure the lipsync was perfect....>>>

Well, her lips match up to the recording, so I'd say she did a pretty good job at it.

<<I cannot see why any director would waste funding on such a trick noone will notice? >>>

First of all, who do you figure money would have been "wasted"? It would have cost them about the same as shooting it at normal speed.

And what makes so sure that "no one will notice"? I noticed it. I'm sure other people had to have spotted it.

reply

Whether the lipsync was 'perfect' in regard to how well the actress' lips matched with the song is moot.

The scene wasn't about Bryan Ferry supposedly singing the song live.

It was a scene of two kids lipping to a record.

No reason why two kids doing that would have to be perfect in their lipping.

Thank you for explaining that effect. I certainly noticed it, and did wonder how it was achieved. I suspected it must have been something like you described.

It made the scene much more magical and graceful than filming it normally!

He was on Planet Earth the whole time!

Its quite technical... she dances in slow mo, but seems to be lipsynching to the music which is in real time ? Did she slo mo her lipsynch to get it to fit, or was it just not quite in synch
