The problem with remakes isn't unoriginality. There are plenty of films that I think can be remade with new ideas added and new themes explored upon. The problem with remakes is that most remakes are Hollywood productions, and they're just cynical commercial products banking on brand name recognition, so Hollywood producers don't want anything new added to the film. Now if you look at the producers of the Suspiria remake, 9 out of 12 of the producers are Italians, and none of the producers seem like Hollywood high rollers. Some seem very indie, and one has his name attached to many ambitious films, including Let Me In, which I'll admit I haven't seen, but I hear is actually a really good remake of Let the Right One In. Besides, they have an Italian art house filmmaker directing it. I'd rather an Italian art house guy be doing it than an American horror director who'll just add more horror cliches to the movie.
Also, if younger people are going to think the remake is THE Supiria without ever hearing about the original, then they would never have ended up hearing about the original Suspiria even in the first place cause the only young people who would no about the original are into older movies.
