why not just remake Rosemary's baby into a Tv miniseries at this rate?

oh wait they did that already too. *beep* greedy ass retards in the film business, I can't wait to see them fail and I will laugh and laugh at them.

Who cares, man? Why is it a bad thing that more movies are being made? The original will always be there. Why not let someone else make their own out of it?

reply

It's not like I'm losing sleep over it kiddo, so keep your hippy nonsense to yourself.
If I want to express my opinion about something that is exquisitely stupid, than I will do so.

Why don't they just remake Casablanca, or No Country for Old Men, etc?
You have no argument for why stuff that was perfectly fine and top of the line to be remade by less competent people for the sole reason of making something with a recognizable name for profit. It's boring, stagnant, and a waste of time for those watching and those making the film because it's never going to be close to the quality of the original work. And boy how pathetic and so clear that it is scraping the bottom of the barrel when of all things, they are remaking fkin Suspiria.

It'd be like remaking Easy Rider, Pulp Fiction, or Memento. Oh wait that's right... they're remaking Memento now too.

TLDR - I care, dumbass.

reply

Memento has already been remade, and I believe there was even a remake of the remake.

Also, a remake doesn't have to be bad. Look at Evil Dead, a remake that was really more of a re-imagining and actually wasn't half bad for what it was. Look at the Man Who Knew Too Much, a remake by its own director that DEFINITELY exceeds the original in quality. I think that Suspiria could be remade well, however what worries me most is that the film was definitely a product of its time. Those highly saturated colors would not fly now, nor would a score by Goblin. I'm not writing it off just yet.

And for the record, I want a No Country remake. It could stand some tweaks, and was not even close to being the flawless masterpiece many made it out to be.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law!

Your complaining about bad Hollywood decisions, when Hollywood isn't even remaking Suspiria. Italy is.

It doesn't matter who is making it, what matters is why. It's a dumb decision.

reply

Can you elaborate why it's dumb or are you just going to complain and be cynical?

The problem with remakes isn't that "people are running out of ideas", because people love movies that don't offer anything new all the time. Drive is nothing more than a very well done Le Samourai rip off, and people keep arguing whether Dredd or the Raid: Redemption ripped the other movie off when their similarities both come from Assault on Precinct 13. The problem with remakes is that Hollywood is rich enough to acquire the rights to most intellectual properties, and Hollywood is a cynical system that hardly ever knows how to update material. Take a look at the RoboCop remake. They just applied a bunch of Hollywood trends to RoboCop without understanding it. They throw some ham fisted references from the original in there like certain catchphrases to appease fans of the original. They ignore the fact that it's an over the top satire and make it into a dark and gritty movie because kids liked the Dark Knight and they're worried that nobody would take a film with a satirical tone seriously. Also, just don't make it a satire whatsoever because making a point about current issues is too political so just mention current issues without making a point about it. And to make sure kids can actually go see the movie, PG13 now. So now we have a film that has no stance on anything, a bunch of bland trends that worked better in other movies, neutered by the PG13 rating and we're left with something that only resembles the original film in very superficial ways. Lame.

Now let's take a look at the Maniac remake, not a Hollywood production. But produced by French filmmakers, as well as the director of the original. What separated the original Maniac from other slashers at the time is that it feels like it's a character study as we watch the killer live the life in the world he's in and why he feels the urge to kill. The crew responsible for the remake understood this and updated these themes to make it suit modern times, so rather it being about a killer's urge growing from the loneliness of urban decay of 1980, they update it to be about a killer's urge growing from the loneliness of the technological social disconnect of 2012. They also do this while adding new ideas and a new vision to the material, so it becomes a film that compliments the original and adds to it's legacy rather than being like the Halloween remake which will be the Halloween an entire generation of filmgoers will grow up on. Also, the French don't give no f so R rating. And the original isn't even French. It's about as American as you can get.

Now we have a remake of an Italian horror film by Italian producers and an Italian arthouse filmmaker. I admittedly haven't seen much by Luca Guadagnino, but I have done some research. On the Rotten Tomatoes page for his film I Am Love, the critical consensus is "It stumbles into melodrama, but I Am Love backs up its flamboyance with tremendous visual style and a marvelous central performance from Tilda Swinton." And you know how you love Suspiria because of the insane visuals mixing with the great Goblin score? One of the critics for I Am Love said "The marriage of music and image seldom gets better than this." Can you honestly think of a better filmmaker to remake the film? And kids don't watch foreign movies, so it's not like there's gonna be a whole generation who are gonna view this as their Suspiria. The only people who are gonna see it are fans of the original. So aren't you just a little interested? Of all the filmmakers out there, I haven't seen many horror movies quite like Suspiria, so if another horror movie like Suspiria is a Suspiria remake, then fine by me.

Anyways, what's your point?

You made some great points. Thank you for adding to the discussion. I'm actually looking forward to the remake now, whereas I was pretty neutral on it before, because of your comment. You write very well.

the original Suspiria is one of my favorite films,

I don't mind the remake, it could be interesting to see what
can be done with the material,

if it doesnt work my beloved Suspiria is still there.

and I am urging to see Tida Swinton as Madama Blanc.
