A Remake is Actually a Good Idea

I watched Suspiria for the first time last night at a screening. I think its a good film but there is just so much that could be improved upon. Reading that its being remade actually excites me because this gives an opportunity to improve the film without changing the original film that is obviously beloved by some.

"The plot is "okay". What wowed me are the spectacular and breathtaking cinematography and set design. The acting is passable with a noteworthy performance from Jessica Harper who plays the lead.

A mayor problem I had with the film is the bad voice dubbing.
There are occasions where the dialogue is barely audible.

I was also mixed on the score, sometimes it works wonderfully but often it is incredibly jarring and annoying.

Also the scene where Sara, Suzy's friend, gets killed was ridiculous. I mean she could have easily prevented the killer from entering the room. But instead she stacks boxes on top of each other to climb out of a window, and instead of looking down first she jumps straight into a bail of barbwire. I know some people will say that it's "dream logic" but this movie flips the logic on a dime. That scene was pure lazy writing.

I mean the sets and cinematography are surreal and dreamlike for sure. But throughout the film the character Sara acted like rational person, until the plot required her to act stupid.

The flaws of this film sadden me because had these been adjusted "Suspiria" could have been a true horror masterpiece. Still it is in many aspects a great film that can be strongly recommended to anyone that is curious. 7.8/10"

Usually I don't like remakes but I think this remake could work.

I copied my review just to share my thoughts.

I've not seen the original film but will do.
A new version must be handled with care so that it don't turn out like a trashy remake of a slasher classic. We got several of those 10-15 years ago.

This movie is prime for being remade, but the vocal minority is the loudest, and you'll have a million people judging this before it's even made, then when it comes out and it's good, they'll be the same people praising it. I wish people would just stop complaining about remakes, it's so tiresome. Wait until the movie is out and you've seen it to judge it, and don't even get me started on the people who claim that remakes ruin the originals..

I wish they would get Disasterpeace for the soundtrack, I'd think he'd nail it after hearing his work on the It Follows soundtrack.

unfortunately once a remake commences production it is far too late as money has been spent to turn back.

If we knew what kind of things they planned on doing concept wise not plot wise then maybe we the fans can say if its a good idea or not.

The ghostbusters remake is a prime example of not listening to what fans wanted. It would not have gotten so much hate if it was a sequel and had the original ghostbusters in some capacity not as different characters in a remake.

This is why people hate remakes they usually can't compete. Name me a remake besides john carpenters the thing that was an improvement over the original.

Hollywood has shown they are incompetent in almost all remakes so fans should protest this horrible idea.

Argento's style is very integral to suspiria's best features and also some of its biggest distractions as well.

A Ghostbusters 3 with the original four was in the works, but that was abandoned when Harold Ramis suddenly died.

As for remakes that were an improvement over the original in my opinion, there's The Departed, better than Infernal Affairs and Red Dragon, better than Manhunter.

That being said, this film will not be better than the one from the 70's, but if it fails, maybe it will rekindle interest in that classic. How is that a bad thing?

I was at the beginning against a remake, and I am still a bit wary nowadays but I am curious as well to see what they can pull out.

The original Suspiria is one of the films I love the most. For sure it has defects, but it has also some original features that I am afraid cannot be repeated.

The only thing in the original I find purely a defect is the acting of some of the non central characters, for example, some of the girls at the institute, but I have to say it did not even bother me that much.

The very simple plot: for me Suspiria must be seen more like a dream. It has a plot, but it is basic. You can this way concentrate on the fantastic images and music. The plot can stay that way for me.

Some people see it as dated: yes if you watch it now it has for sure a very 70s atmosphere, but this is something that works great in the film, one of its main strenghts, and I am afraid it will be no easy to repeat it or replace it nowadays. I think the only director that could pull out a similar atmosphere in modern key is Refn. This director, Luca Guadagnino, seems a good director but he seems to have no experience either with horror, thrillers, or really visual films...

Last thing for me, Alida Valli as Miss Tanner. A fantastic actress and very stricking in her role, who can replace her?

I don't have a problem with remakes personally, but they have to be done right, and they so often are not. Having the likes of Tilda Swinton attached to this gives me some hope that it will be well-handled with some integrity.
