It's School of Rock!

But worse! Way worse!

What the hell was with the music? It was trite pop garbage!

Only funny scenes - keyboard dude and british accents. That's it.

reply

Sorry, don't see it. The only resemblance is kids who play music.

reply

And the older screw-up kicked out of his own band who, while a joke at first, eventually teaches kids about themselves and life and "how to rock out" and all that crap leading up to the final performance where they get encored over the main act (or winner) and the movie`s over.

Boosh. Same movie.

reply

While I actually liked this movie. At the end I was definately thinking Jack Black. Obviously there were differences but it was practically the same basic plot as School of Rock

reply

Am I missing something here? 'School of Rock'??

Jack Black- Failed rocker gets kicked out of band and cons his way into teaching at a school.

Rainn Wilson- Successful rocker gets kicked from band and TWENTY years later is a loser who moves in with his sister.

JB- Starts to notice musically talented middle school kids and convinces them to form a band so he can still play at a battle of the bands.

RW- Is asked by his nephew to sit in with the nephew's band to play a show for prom.

JB- Spends the movie bringing a band together for this one event. He teaches the kids about life, he learns something too. They play show.

RW- Spends movie drumming with a band after getting discovered on Youtube; touring, partying, etc. While he makes an impact on the kids, it is actually HE who learns the most about life.

The climax of the movie is more complex... As is the whole plot actually. If the rest of the band were thirty somethings, no one would compare this movie to 'School of Rock'.

That's a very thoughtful post. Now it's up to the original poster to respond to it. I'm waiting ...

This movie is nothing like "School of Rock." It's more like "Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny," but even that would be a reach.

reply

I hated School Of Rock and loved The Rocker

reply

Pardon me? It's up to the original poster to respond to it? I'm not watching this thread's every move, you know. I do like to have something of a life...

The whole of the plot is largely identical to School of Rock. You can name as many small insignificant differences as you like and ignore the basic plot as being too bloody similar to School of Rock if you like, but I tend to look beyond intricate petty details and examine the larger picture.

I normally don't care if a movie is identical to another, but I found this one to be a second-rate rehash of something so much better. The leads didn't deserve this crap.

"If the rest of the band were thirty somethings, no one would compare this movie to 'School of Rock'. "

But they're not. The plot is designed around them being kids, so the movie would be COMPLETELY different if it were about thirty-somethings.

If you still feel like you're "missing something here," then I'm not very good at explaining my opinion (which I certainly admit), so go to metacritic and read the countless reviews explaining what I'm trying to, but much better.

Jack Black- UNWANTED rocker gets kicked out of band and as a LOSER who lives with his friend and cons his way into teaching at a school.

Rainn Wilson- UNWANTED rocker gets kicked from band and 20 years later is a LOSER who moves in with his sister.

Who cares if its 20 years?

JB- Starts to notice musically talented middle school kids and convinces them to form a band so he can still play at a battle of the bands.

RW- Is asked by his nephew to sit in with the nephew's band to play a show for school prom. Definately encourages them throughout to think more of themselves.

JB- Spends the movie bringing a band together for this one event. He teaches the kids about life, he learns something too. They play show. are encored because of some "mishap".

RW- Spends most of the movie bringing a band together for one event, any gig and then eventually supporting vesuvius.. they play the show. are encored because of some "mishap".

If the rest of the band were thirty somethings, no one would compare this movie to 'School of Rock'. - Yeah i would. Because its not the only similarity.

I dont think the whole film is more complex either... Not nearly as heartwarming anyway. Especially as the film was called the Rocker with not a hint of rock.

The general arc is the same but the only funny parts that were really any good were the 9 months in you bit and some occasional slapstick. The music ruined it, and no real energy for Rainn, which i expected.

I cant believe you wrote this overly pedantic post! If it were all exactly the same it wouldnt have even been made! There are many similarities, The End!

reply

You can't believe I wrote my opinion? What are we all doing here? If you excluded every pedantic post and thread from imdb, we wouldn't have much reason to take each other seriously to begin with. I think that's part of the fun in discussing film in the first place.

What I wrote was a reflection of what differences I saw in the film. I think this film WAS more complex. But to be honest, I wasn't a fan of 'School of Rock'. I liked it for what it was, but I was expecting more (though to be honest, with 'The Rocker', I was expecting less so...). I thought it was cheesy and predictable. Jack Black didn't really show anything new which is maybe what I was expecting. I knew what the film was going for but I really didn't feel all that fuzzy inside. I don't think either film was particularly heartwarming.

I thought Rainn had great energy. I was expecting to see Dwight Shrute, but I saw a completely different character. I say it's more complex because the twist and turns in the plot were less predictable in 'The Rocker'. Not to say that either film had an original storyline, but for me, this film had more originality. I felt 'School of Rock' more to be the dumbed down comedy version of 'Mr. Holland's Opus'(If we are going to compare plot points in a very general sense).

When I first saw this film, I did not think 'School of Rock' once. I didn't even make the comparison until I saw this thread.

it's better! way better!

~~*AIM*~~
The world will look up and shout "Save us!"... And I'll whisper "No."

reply

This movie has nothin on School of Rock. The whole movie is a cliche. Entertaining nontheless though.

reply

- an older looser rocker (slightly overweight) has a 2nd chance playing with kids
- a cute bassist girl
- Marshall amps, Apple computers (what was wrong with Volvo ?)
- at the end, the audience kick the former band out and encores the kids

reply

I totally agree, it did remind me a bit of School of Rock, only this movie sucked. Sorry to anyone who liked it.

reply

if you think this is enything like school of rock then you must of had your eyes closed couse i think their both completely diffrient and the rocker is way better than school of rock like come on what do you think , the music in school of rock was good it was s*** complete crap, but the rockers was OK

reply

You suck. School of Rock had Zeppelin. Case closed.

PS. The Rocker had embarrassing music and the film was a bore.

School of Rock is much better for the people who love Rock with every ounce of their hearts.
