Female bassists

Has anyone else noticed that in every band movie(that has a female in the band) that they are usually the bassist?

The Rocker, Rock My World, The New Guy, School Of Rock, etc.
Or is it just me that thinks this?

Cliche not that there aren't female bass players out there they need a typical "Hot chick""Romantic interest" or "Strong Tomboy Girl" in the movie.

Joan Jett plays bass because it frees her to do vocals and move around the way she wants.

Nancy Wilson plays lead guitar, but Heart's music lays heavily on the harmony guitarist.

Rebecca Brown played bass in School of Rock, but it was only because she was the second best guitar player in auditions. The kid who got lead guitar was nothing short of phenomenal, but Rebecca can play well too-just not as good as the lead.

In my band the bass guitarist was a girl. She was hot, and she knew it. For a show, her fave outfit was a long sleeve shirt, hot pants, and knee high boots. When she would put a leg up on the drum kit and lean, you could see the guys drool. She would see them, smile, and look back at me. She would monkey around like this unless were playing something difficult. For the difficult stuff, she would come around back of the drums and stand there watching me while she played her notes.

Joan Jett plays guitar with the Blackhearts, not bass. Kim Deal of the Pixies (and the Breeders) plays bass (although I don't think she did in the Breeders)

yep, there are tons of female bass players:
Melissa Auf der Maur (Hole, and The Smashing Pumpkins on their last tour)
Kim Deal (Pixies)
Jill Emery (Hole)
Eva Gardner (The Mars Volta)
Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)
Leslie Hardy (Hole)
Paz Lenchantin (A Perfect Circle, Zwan)
Lyn-Z (Mindless Self-Indulgence)
Zia McCabe (The Dandy Warhols)
Kristen Pfaff (Hole)
Kira Roessler (Black Flag)
Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads)
Kathi Wilcox (Bikini Kill)
Tracy Wormworth (B-52's)
Sean Yseult (White Zombie)
Annette Zilinskas (The Bangles)

not to mention D'arcy Wretzky (http://www.yuppiepunk.org/images/bass-darcy.jpg), original bass player of The Smashing Pumpkins, who's also totally hot.

my co-worker is in a punk band, and i believe she also plays bass.

reply

I admit this is an impressive list but how many of these women can actually play and arent just "hanger on's" i.e. I play bass cause my b/f (or g/f) is in the band. How many of these women take what they do seriously and try to improve?

reply

Wow, that's just stupid.

reply

you really don't know *beep* about music...

reply

What a stupid thing to say!
I started playing bass at age 16 (I tried guitar before, since like, 11), and it has NOTHING to do with love interest, I meet my first boyfriend when I was 17.
And I can say I play better than the two guitarist boyfriends I've had in my life (only one of them played in a band, and while he had his band, I had my own, it was an all-female punk rock band).
I'm no Les Claypool, but I CAN play better than a lot of guys I know, and I know a lot of female musicians who kick some serious a$$es.

We could say that all male bass players are useless like Sid Vicious, and are only in it for the look and the drugs and the money and stuff.

"Joan Jett plays bass because it frees her to do vocals and move around the way she wants. "

Joan Jett most assuredly plays guitar. I can tell you this because I was less than 2 feet away from her and groping her thigh (with her approval) while she and the blackhearts played the Flood Zone in Richmond, VA. Britny Fox opened.

Oh, and because she always play guitar.

reply

Joan Jett does not play bass.

Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!

reply

Joan Jett plays guitar. The bassist in the Blackhearts is named Enzo, just fyi.

reply

Joan Jett has always played guitar.
Bass players in The Runaways had always come and go, the more stable was Jackie Fox, and then Vicki Blue.

There's a problem there with some of the mixed bands. The male members likes their bass players "hot". I played with boys when I was 16, but it was punk rock and we were all noobs.
Then I started to look for my own band, all-female. It was common in the late 90's in USA and Europe, but it was very difficult here in Southamerica.
We despised the whole "sexy" issue.

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language.

You are right uncleal_23, but an exception would be "Freaky Friday": the two guitar players and singer are girls , and the bass player and drummer are male.

There was also the movie Garage Days from Australia.

Another exception would be Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. There are 3 bands in the movie, and in the 3 bands the girl is the drummer.

The World/Inferno Friendship Society has a chick bassist with dreadlocks down to her ass. She's nasty, too.

Sure it's a lame hollywood cliche but its nothing to be ashamed of. For some reason its the sexiest rock instrument a girl can play.

reply

Tina Weymouth of the Talking Heads

I don't mind the fact that they have girls playing bass in these movies. The ROCKer and School of ROCK for instance. I just wish that they would actually ROCK. Or how about even know how to play bass in the first place, in Emma Stone's case.

Oooh! How about Cassandra (Tia Carrere) in Wayne's World! I don't know what, or if, she was actually playing, but she ROCKed.

reply

i thought dizzy played bass in the new guy, the chick (zooey deschanel) was the guitar player.

and how did yall forget nadja peulen from coal chamber?

reply

Kim Gordon plays bass. She was pretty sexy back in the day.

Also, Stephen Malkmus' solo band has a female bassist who's not half bad lookin.

reply

This is done, because they need someone who can supply some "Balls" to the bands sound. "Balls" = Low End.

A female usually plays the bassist in band movies because chicks don't pack the gear to play a real instrument.

reply

Meaning what? You need a penis to play an instrument? I'd have to disagree. Lenny Kravitz's drummer, Lita Ford and her amazing guitar. Hell, Charo plays not bad guitar. You sound like a hater.

I don't remember anyone mentioning the bass player for the Go-Go's, either. She was not bad.

Suzi Quatro, Gaye Advert and what about the amazing Tal Wilkenfeld, currently holding down a gig with Jeff Beck. She is awesome!

They're all gorgeous and every one of them could cut you a new ar*ehole, b*lls or no b*lls!

reply

Kathy Valentine was the Go-Go's bassist....you know, the dikey looking one. Just kidding, they're one of my favorite 80's bands. Saw them back in the day when they opened for the Circle Jerks.

The bassist for Sick Puppies is a girl and very very hot

I noticed this lately in movies. But on another note, I notice this trend in a lot of bands coming out these days.

The ladies in this generation just really dig on playing the bass it seems. My sister's a bassist, and a damn good one too.

My sister also plays bass, and she is a pretty good bassist. My mum plays bass too.

One thing I hardly ever see, however, is female drummers, let alone female metal drummers.

reply

There is usually a chick bassist if the main focus of the band is supposed to be the singer/songwriter, who is usually a guy. Most bands with chick bassists in the real world are like this. I'm not sure why that is, but it might be that the girl wants to be in a band, and bass is easier to learn at first, making it quicker to get on stage (ok flame away, but my first rock instrument was a bass FOR THIS REASON). I have read of a lot of bassists (male & female) who said they started playing bass because their friends "needed a bass player."

I wish I could play bass & sing, but it's really flippin' hard. Guitar is a lot easier once you get used to playing chords.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Johnette Napolitano. Though she is the singer/songwriter and also plays bass.

The only female member of the Japanese Metalcore/Nu Metal/Alternative Metal band Maximum the Hormone is the drummer. She's pretty good.

I don't poly-cotton to coping tropes, even my own.

Mona from The Waboritas. Sammy Hagars Band.

reply

For all you uninformed people, my son has been in the Minneapolis School of Rock, and many of the bass players are girls, and they are really good! So guess again! It does not take a Y chromosome to play a musical instrument!

No one has mentioned Tal Wilkenfeld yet! She is the young, killer bass player for Jeff Beck.

reply

Share from Vixen, even though her skills are average she's still cool

reply

Annie Holland from Elastica is pretty sweet at bass. There are some really choice female guitarists out there, too - Justine Frischmann (Elastica, Suede) Poison Ivy (the Cramps), Kelley Deal (the Breeders). Oh and Orianthi (for MJ) and Bonnie Raitt. Also, there is a kiwi metal band called Chugganaut (they're quite crap) but the drummer is female and she is AMAZING.

reply

My cousin's a girl, she plays bass. I'm a girl, I play guitar. There's a lot of really great female bass and guitar players out there, as pretty much everyone else on this thread has mentioned. About this movie, though. I know Emma Stone probably can't play bass, but they cast her because she's a good actress. Rainn Wilson can't play the drums, either. I still thought it worked, though. I like this movie.
