In Memoriam Omissions
A couple I thought of:
Luke Perry
Brian Tarantina (not a prominent enough actor?)
Others?
Perry was an odd one to leave out as he was in one of the movies that was up for best picture this year, so it wasn't as if he was one of those actors that had long since retired and road off into the sunset.
shareQuestion to ask: Was he an Academy member? His career was mostly television so he may not have joined and would not have been included. I don't know for sure but just a possibility.
R. Lee Ermey was offered membership so they could nominate him for Full Metal Jacket and he declined. When he passed, he was not included because he was not a member.
You are probably right. If they draw the line at members it cuts the list of people dramatically.
