Confused by the ending, or was it just poor?

So Gekko steals his daughters 100 million and disappears to England leaving the young couple in the lurch with a baby on the way. In total secrecy he turns the 100 mil into one billion. Since the baby is not born yet this must happen in a matter of a few short months. Then, out of the blue he turns up on their doorstep, where they are breaking up and miserable and broke, and announces he has given their pet energy project 100 million, and acts as if all is forgiven and now expects to see his grandchild. Yet he offers no apology for stealing her 100 million and in fact doesn't give them a cent, as he tells them he made the check out to the energy scientist. Then he tells them they make a good couple, they kiss, then cut to the party with the baby where everyone is happy and all is well. WTF?
