I would have thought that Jake would have already known about 'Tulipmania'. Instead of having Gekko tell Jake the history of tulipmania, maybe a better approach would have been a discussion on what they both already know on the topic and their opinions there of. Jake's ignorance on subject seemed unlikely.
It is possible to have done undergrad (in economics/finance) and have skipped 'Tulipmania' -- also, I don't readily recall, but Jake went to Fordham. It isn't exactly a top tier school, he was a scrapper who made his way on to the Street...
No not necessarily; but just pointing out the obvious -- that certainly Shia LeB could have gone through Econ 101 at Fordham and not heard of Tulipmania. I would venture to say many supposed econ/poli-sci majors across the country might only have heard the case in the movie for the first time...it is not necessarily a 'must' know case in micro...
Well, when I was in high school (many, many,.... many yrs ago), I had a history teacher who was a total pompous a**. He actually told the class he was just working until his retirement at the end of that year and didn't give a sh*t if we passed his class or not. He was a teen hater for sure - I immediately took a liking to him! lol
He went over economics and while most of the class slept, which he encouraged, I learned quite a bit. He talked about the history of economics and tulip-mania came up as well as onion bulbs and even salt as forms of barter. Tulip-mania stayed in my brain because I thought ... Tulips are Pretty - lol ... I was 16.
So I guess I mean to say is: How do I, a rock-n-roll party girl from the 80's, know about tulip-mania and that little wall street cracker jax kid not know?
hi headrush... it could be the same way you could have read every major book and seen the films on the financial crisis; too big to fail, this time it is different, the big short, inside job, etc and many traders and analysts might never have done so. you thus might recall many particular facts or details about the crisis that an equity sales guy or banker does not about that time... tulipmania is historical; not conceptual... the movie glossed over a lot and got some other parts wrong but not necessarily this incident....
Yeah maybe 'drexeltoker ... Or maybe Jake just slept through that part of economics class. I'm goin with the latter .... I guessin he may have been 'toker' at Fordham - possibly screen named the 'fordhamtoker.
That was one thing that bothered me. Bud Fox went to NYU and wound up as a retail broker and this guy went to Fordham and went to the investment banking side of the house? come on!
I think I learned about tulipmania from a Smithsonian magazine article ten or twenty years ago. It was one of those "Wow, I can't believe this happened" moments. Just seems too weird, a country goes bananas over flowers and when the mania dies the economy collapses. Crazy.

I would expect Tulipmania to be common knowledge amongst people well versed in economics. I don't even major in economics and I know about it. In fact my friend in media studies started a conversation with me about it.
Well what are the use of my brains if I'm tied up with a dumb cluck like you?
You're absolutely right. Jake wouldn't be ignorant about it at all. Gekko was telling that story directly to the audience. For that, the scene was a little ham-handed, though - they could have had him explaining it to some young college student or something. Or better yet, Jake should have interrupted him and completed the story for him.
I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.
