Why is the female lead ugly?

I'm watching it on tv right now; that's the first thing I thought; I'm not sure if its her short hair or is she just that ugly; either way she looks like a boy.

Carey Mulligan is popular with the powers that be, the way Julia Ormond was 25 years ago.

In just about every scene with her scrunchy little face and boyish haircut I can't help but think "Always after me Lucky Charms!" http://youtu.be/Vcx9qTTVL3s She looks like a freaking Leprechaun. Not ugly but too goofy for this allegedly serious role. This plus the fake Brooklyn accents plus the whimpering has-been David Byrne soundtrack renders this movie virtually un-watchable.
