How many years did Gekko do in jail?

and when was he sentenced and incarcerated.

I think it said 8 years. Watch the movie it explains it all.

Piecing things together from what Winnie told Jake and from what Gorden hinted at about the appeals he went through his final appeal was in 1993. So if he was sentenced to 8 years behind bars and got out in 2001, going to jail in 93 sounds about right.

Wouldn't his cell phone have been dated, even at the time that he went to jail? I'd think he would have upgraded to a newer model.

reply

2 reasons I think he didn't upgrade-

First, all his assets BUT the account he made for Winnie and hid in Sweden was taken over by the SEC. In essence, he had zero money. He was broke. What money he did have was being eaten up by appeals, legal fees and lawyers. So maybe he didn't have the money to upgrade and had to keep using the one he had.

2nd-I think the reason they returned the old outdated cellphone to him when he got out of jail was as nod to the first film, because that's the prop/phone that was used in the first one.

IF he took it into jail He would get it back up on release --- That's jail at all Levels

reply

he said 8 years in the movie I think

I worked hard for this I need nobody

reply

Wasn't it 14 years?

I think he said something like
"I didn't spend 122,000 hours in jail for nothing"

reply

Well, the very first scene gave a decent clue. I think it was easily over 10 years.

At prison check-out he got a check for a little over $1,800. They said it was for 50 cents a day while inside minus what he spent. $1,800-even would translate to 9.8 years. I am sure he spent enough to make it well over ten years.

Edit: Watching now. He did say, as mentioned above "I did eight years. Eight years and five in court". So I wonder if the 5 in court he was also in custody? (adding up to the "122,000 hours in jail" mentioned above)

reply

I thought he was arrested in the end of the first movie. 1985-2001 = 16 years

reply

I think it's 5 yrs detainment and 8 yrs of prison sentence.

reply

He says 122,000 hours. Thats just shy of 14 years.

About half a dozen times in the movie:
8 years in prison.
5 years of trials and appeals.

“I did 8 years, pal. 5 years before that in court. Nobody does 8 years. They give murderers 5.” - G.G.

1985 - Setting of First Movie.
October 22, 2001 - Prison Release (See USA Today Paper when he gets his prison check).
June 2008 - Setting of Second Movie.

so this means he went to court around 1988 and he was incarcerated around 1993.

1985 - Met Bud Fox
1988 - Court
1993 - Prison
2001 - Released
2008 - Met Jake Moore
