Friday the 13th: Capitalism Appetizers
Remember the impact of Black Friday, and how it still haunts our current views of dynamic capitalism?
"Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" (2010) reintroduces our beloved Gekko, a great character in film history, now out of prison and looking to work his way back into the labyrinth of fortune trading.
When I think of the American horror film avatar Jason Voorhees from the seminal Friday the 13th film franchise which began in 1980 and continues through 2009, we find a psychotic and eerie hockey-mask wearing serial killer who stalks American teenagers in the woods by the lake where he was dishonored as a young boy.
Jason Voorhees is America's version of the Irish leprechaun, and of course, since America is more heavily invested in capitalism serendipity, Jason Voorhees is a more menacing and more scary leprechaun figure.
As we see Gekko working with the meanderings of Wall Street again, this time with a new prodigy on the scene (portrayed by Shia LaBeouf), we think about why Americans create characters such as Gordon Gekko and Jason Voorhees to characterize 'leering luck.'
