Her role is an absolute throwaway.

to show the greedy consumer levered up the river/greedy house flipper side of the crisis. you are right tho... oliver stone tried for way too many themes in this movie and that is why it fell flat on the whole versus the original or expectations...

Her role was a cameo at best, and suited to representing the middle class or someone who is trying to represent the middle class. Her son is way above that and has to bail her out of situations.

Films are not reality. Reality is not film. Film is only an approximation of reality.

Same reason Charlie Sheen's in it: Because they've got a few million fans who will watch anything with them in it, and that will draw in more product placement cash.
