Why didn't Jake just challenge Ryan to a boxing match?

After he got his ass kicked, he could've been like, "OK, we fought your way now let's fight mine." He would've killed Ryan in a boxing match and Ryan would've looked like a pussy if he refused.

What makes you so sure Jake would have won?

Another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men

I just think that if Ryan could only punch, he'd be in trouble. And Jake was clearly bigger than him.

Couldn't Jake also torment Ryan about the fact that he can't box since he beat him when they had a strictly boxing match?

You're assuming alot. Jake had no problems dooking it out at the football game but that's not boxing. Yes he showed he could handle himself and perhaps showed some puganist skills but again that's not boxing. Ryan had speed, agility, quickness etc etc. And both guys looked about the same size. It wasn't until Jake got some serious training that he was able to kick Ryan's but.

You really think Ryan could box?

Because, we have now been exposed to professional mixed martial arts. It was first televised in 1993. The target audience for Never Back Down is probably males in their teens or early twenties. They have never known a time without mixed martial arts. To lure them away from the video games, fight films must live up to certain expectations.

Boxing is still a great sport. But it just lacks the action and variety of mma.

The last boxing movie that had an interesting story, plus being well remembered, and that was also a financial success was Rocky. It is the only boxing film to win the academy award for Best Picture(1976). Cinderella Man(2005), about the heavyweight champion James J. Braddock, was the best boxing film I've seen. The climactic fight between Braddock and Max Baer was terrific. But it was a boxoffice failure. Mark Wahlberg's film, Fighter, about Mickey Ward, is due out in December. It may reverse the trend.
