What makes him an obnoxious prick isn't his terrible jokes or his retarded sunglasses behind the head look. It is that he tries to make every restaurant, every meal, every ingredient all about him. He tries to act like a food critic, a chef, and a normal Joe all at the same time, and he comes off as annoying.
My wife loves the show, and I will watch it with her occasionally. The show is good in spite of its obnoxious host.
