Comparing the 2020 version with the 1970 version.
I was so excited to see the new 2020 version of The Boys in the Band when it finally came to cable. However, I was disappointed that it wasn't as good as the 1970 version. Just to be fair, I bought the 1970 version on Amazon Prime and watched it again after I last saw it about 15 years ago on video tape. The 1970 version is far better in acting, interpretation and even casting. The 1970 version's Harold is absolutely riveting. I had forgotten how excellent the actor played his role. By comparison, the 2020 Harold is weak. There was something so poignant about the 1970 performance. I was 22 years old when the 1970 version came out, and I did see it in the movie theater back then. I was a young gay man who had not yet experienced sex in any form, and I was struck by a sense of what was to come for me as I watched the portrayal of gay life on the screen. The performances in the newer version lack the urgency and vitality. Something was missing. I do appreciate the attempt to do a revival of the film with an all gay cast, but I don't think the production adequately captures the essence of the story. Instead of remaking a time honored film, I feel it would have been better to have created a more modern story about gay friends getting together to celebrate with a more current perspective.
