Regarding Pascal and Fermat...*SPOILERS*

Alright, I just finished watching the movie, and something is currently bothering me.

Now, the entire premise of the plot is that Hilbert hated Balois for 'solving' Golbach's Conjecture before he did, and he wanted revenge. Now I can understand how Olivia got caught up in all of this (though I don't think it makes much sense), but...how in the hell did Pascal and Fermat get caught up in this?

Viewers were informed of the relationship between Pascal/Fermat, but I can't seem to see any connection between Hilbert and Pascal/Fermat. Why in the hell did Hilbert want to kill the two of them?

EDIT: Oh, I would also like to take a moment to thank all the beautiful people on this board who makes topics with spoilers right in the headline. Thanks, folks.

Pleased to meet you.

huh good point. I dont think he wanted to kill them per se.
he needed 'Fermat' to be the fall guy and red herring, and without Pascal the ploy wouldnt work...

but how did he hear of them? In Newspaper? oh hey how lucky, both are above average mathematicans!

Anyway he went to alot of *beep* trouble the crazy bastard.

reply

Please explain. How was "Fermat" the fall guy? By that you mean that the murders of all the others would have been blamed on him, right? But how, considering the circumstances of his own death?

reply

Fermat had a motive to kill Pascal, which would make him look like the murderer. His own death would be a random car accident.

reply

Except that as we're been told, Fermat didn't know who Pascal was.
Pascal recognized the image from the wallet which was left there by ACCIDENT.

So if the girl's father had no idea he ran his daughter, how did Hilbert find out

It doesn't matter whether he knew him or not, with Fermat dead from the 'accident' and Pascal crushed the police would no doubt find out about their connection when they investigate the deaths and assume that Fermat DID know.

Fermat was supposed to die just two minutes from the room which would have been very suspicious - the police would have realised there was a connection to the events and researched their backgrounds.
