Accents on the letters

Was there any significance in Hilbert always adding the missing accents whenever a Spanish word was written on the black board? The credit sequences also had the accents appearing a few seconds after the text appeared.

I thought it was just a way to show how anal he was. I more and more every time he did that.

Yep, and I quite agreed with him. Even impending death is no excuse for sloppy punctuation!

I thought it was a hint. The similarity between Hilbert's accents fixation and how the accents appeared in the opening credits was a way for the directors to say "It's him", without being too obvious.

I didn't see the accents in the opening credits but if you look at the name of the small boat they use to cross the lake it's Pythágoras with an accent. I didn't notice this until the end of the film but thought this was supposed to be a clue if you were observant enough or an aha moment if you'd care to rewatch the film.

And the "Poseidén" presses also had an accent mark but a lot of words in Spanish have accents, so what's that got to do with anything?

I didn't notice that! Had to check the opening credits again to see those accents.

My thinking is the anal about accents was generational.

Only some one from Spain may answer, but I guessing there may be some cultural shift where there is an orthography change, like the German language dropping the ß.

I just assumed it was Hilbert showing his age compared to the sloppy younger generation in their writing.
