Fermat was a rather pointless character in the scheme

Was there more to his part than being a red herring? Why did Hilbert choose him in the first place? And was Fermat's connection to Pascal just coincidental?

Hibert chose Fermat so the police would think the room was revenge against Pascal for injuring Fermat's daughter. So yes, Fermat was a red herring, but he wasn't a pointless character in the scheme. He was an essential component.
