shareWhat makes you think it is supposed to take place in Mexico? Did I miss the part where they said where it takes place? The movie is a Spanish film and so I would just as easily assume it takes place in Spain.
shareSince Mexicans do speak Spanish, and thats pretty much the only spannish speakers americans know (europe is a country in africa according to majority of them) they automatically assume spanish language = mexico.

And no, sadly not everyone know where europe is. In fact sadly a sginifcant amount of people mix up africa and europe. Also Taiwan is a country, so comparing it to a continent is unreasonable. American knowing where Europe is is equivalent to European knowing where Asia is.
