I haven't read the book or seen other versions. I thought it brought the brutality and futility of war, and particularly the meat grinder aspect of ww1 trench warfare to the forefront.

The book impacts that better and so does the movie from the seventies

Agreed, it was good, there have be some criticism of it not staying ‘true’ the book or other versions, but I’m of the view it’s not always that productive to just copy something else.
