Could Strike $85M Worldwide Debut; Update $30m domestic OW

New Line’s Covid-delayed DC movie Shazam! Fury of the Gods will finally hit theaters this weekend in 77 offshore territories and the U.S. with a global outlook between $80M-$85M, $35M of that coming from domestic.

The David F. Sandberg directed sequel most recently was scheduled to open on Dec. 21, but in August last year, Warner Bros decided they weren’t going to play second fiddle to Avatar: The Way of Water, and moved the sequel to mid-March where they now have access to Imax auditoriums, as well as Dolby, Plf screens, and motion seats. Total theater count for Friday is north of 4,300 locations. Previews start Thursday at 3Pm in 3,400 theaters.

Friday afternoon: We’re hearing that New Line’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently on its way to an $11M Friday, inclusive of last night’s $3.4M, for what’s looking like a $30M opening at 4,071 theaters. The pic cost $125M before P&A, $25M more than the first Shazam!

Shazam (2019) had an OW of $53.4m and grossed $140m for comparison. $366m WW.

In my part of the world WBD channels seems to have saturation advertising of Shazam. New line owned by them.

Bad timing for this movie. Covid hit and then the DCEU is scrapped.

According to Rolling Stone, Shazam! Fury of the Gods had a $125 million budget. As a comparison, the first Shazam! had an estimated budget of $90 million.
It will need $300 million WW to make a profit.
