They didnt really elaborate on their relationship.

Anyways, it was a good series.

Yes he was. Maybe he thought Beth might make him straight or he was just fooling himself with a dream of a normal life with a wife and a family. But anyway when push came to shove he couldn't go through with it.

In the book there was no boyfriend for Townes, Beth wanted him really bad and she never learned his first name.

In the film I thought it was rather obvious that he was gay. In the final episode when Townes is visiting Beth in Moscow, he eludes to his homosexuality when he suggests the Russians thought he would be a distraction for Beth when they allowed him into the country.
