Anyone else getting fed up with mobile phones in horror movies?

Every time I see a horror film and some hysterical teen tries to 'dial for help' - oh no, what a surprise - no signal!

I know that if they got signal every time the movie would probably end (blandly) after about ten minutes, but it just happens time after time...

Well, this time it seems plausible.
They were on open water, miles from the coast.
Plus perhaps a spotty coverage.

I believe it.

Actually, given how close they were to the marina lights, I'd say they weren't more than a few hundred meters offshore.

There was an interesting post at the weblog Arbogast on Film, which noted that in Asian horror films the cell phones always work - it just doesn't do any good, because everyone ends up dead anyway!

On top of that, I think she says in that scene that she's trying to call the police back home. Maybe a local call would have worked but the long distance would be less reliable?

or the battery's dead. Yep, I was thinking the same thing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I know that if the hero just called the police the moment the masked serial killer was outside it would make the film a lot shorter. But I'm just getting fed up with every time someone takes a mobile phone out of their pocket it's either low battery or no signal.

About the only film that got round it that I've seen in recent times in Funny Games (US) where the killer makes a point of disabling the phone before he strikes.

It's just an old horror cliche with new technology. Before cell phones became ubiquitous, the hero's/victim's car wouldn't start.

and the land line which had been disconnected, the dredded DOOT DOOT DOOT sound.

I agree it's become the tired excuse for a lack of originality and it's been done to death. Pardon the pun!
I watched until the guy did the rabbit punch and killed the silly girl and couldn't bare to watch any more as it was that bad a film.

So, was there no ship to shore radio then.........:)

Water or not it doesnt make sense. Satellites circle the earth, water and land. Today you can get a signal anywhere.

Since everyone has cell phones nowadays, if you didn't include a scene where the good guys try to call for help, everyone would say, "Well, how come they didn't try to use their cell phone?"

Think about a Commando remake... when Sully try to run for the pay phone... oh boy Matrix would be caught, his daughter killed and the movie would be a payback revenge only at best... lol

No but seriously, yeah they got to include the cell, just to point out it would be unrealistic unless you set your movie in 1980 that nobody got a cell phone. And yeah they seem to work almost anywhere exept subway, at least for me...

Alice is the worst character of all time, she need to die in the last movie. Chris/Jill are RE !!!
