good idea, bad ending (spoilers)

Really enjoyed the opening half of the film but the ending didn't make much sense to me.

If the main guys plan was just to wipe out all surrogates and that plan could have been achieved non lethally (as it evidently could given Willis' character did it) then why would he choose the lethal route?

He felt humanity had to suffer for wanting to live like that. If humanity suffered this awful blow (death of hundreds of millions of people) then those who are left would appreciate what they had and not go down that path again. Same bull, different genre.
