If a body is lying still for 8 hours a day, and then sleeping for another 8, never leaving the home, wouldn't it eventually become obese or crippled?
How would adults date? If everyone "out there" was a surrogate, how would you know you were even dating the gender you were attracted to? It would also make cheating rampant.
And how would a pregnant woman go for prenatal checkups? If it's so dangerous to be out on the streets, how would anyone go to the doctor or dentist? Would surrogates do the physical exams and procedures?
well, they dont lay still for 8 hours. they get up to eat, poop, pee, etc etc whenever, the suri just goes on stand by, "pause" still until they come back to the stem chair, example, where the engineer was in the can, his suri was just standing still, when he got back to his stem chair and "logged on" the suri "jolted" back to life.
It's no more dangerous to go out in Surrogate world as it is to go out presently. In fact, it's safer because the crime rate dramatically decreased. But after years of being in a surrogate, humans begin to get scared of the real world.
While they are freer from disease and freak accidents in a surrogate, a real human can still take a trip to the dentist or even doctor visits.
Think of it like shoes. Before there were shoes, nobody complained about their feet getting scratched or dirtied. After shoes were invented, you'd be crazy to go out in public without them. Same for surrogates. WE can live without surrogates because we know no other way to live. But if surrogacy became a real thing, then people would think it was crazy to go out without one.
And as for the dating aspect, look at internet dating...it's one of the BIGGEST ways to meet people presently but you have no way of knowing what the person really looks like (since people tend to put deceiving pictures on the internet) unless you physically meet them...dating on the internet, you could be talking to the same sex...however, there comes a point where you actually meet the person. And clearly in surrogate world, that would eventually happen. Just a little later in the game. Once you truly committed to someone, you'd go meet the real them.
I actually think it's interesting because basically you'd have to really care about the person you were with before meeting them. And anybody who has a child in surrogate world clearly loves his or her partner because they had to shut their units of and have sex like the good old days.
I don't know why I'm ranting because this IS only a movie. Logic isn't something to necessarily look for.
The initial question still stands though. What do you do about obesity and atrophy? The real people who are constantly plugged in would be incredibly unhealthy.
I spend a huge amount of time on the PC as I also use it for work (game developer / coder / artist) and I'm not really fat or athropiated, but rather muscular, so a lot of people wonder how I manage and actually appreciate me for being in good shape. Anyway, because of that, I should assume I'm not a generic case, but an exception.
