Young Enoch Thompson Returns a Hat with the Money Intact - ??

Did you understand what happened in that exchange between young Nucky and the men on the porch in episode 1 of season 5? The Sheriff asks Nucky for the truth about why Nucky did not just take the money.

Nucky replies: To get ahead.

Then the men kick him off the porch and that's the end of it.

Seems like they should have insisted little Nucky take some kind of reward. And what did Nucky mean by what he said? I feel like it's either a weak scene or that I missed something. Probably the latter.

The little kids pamphlet on morals Nucky's mom gives him says you have to be honest to get ahead. He didn't take the money and returned it because he's living by the pamphlet, getting ahead through honesty and integrity. The one guy was gonna give him the money anyway but the Commodore stops him. The Commodore doesn't like how self-righteous and goody two shoes little Nucky is and thinks he needs to man up. He only gives him a job after he attacks Neary.
