nothing against the legitimacy of Rap or Hip-Hop as an art form, just not the first thing I would think of when in association with a movie of a dude who is the king from an African country of Wakanda called T'challa that goes around kicking major ass, as seen previously in CW.
I would rather hear a tribal style of rhythm, a futuristic kind of score [to accompany Wakanda's level of scientific evolution] or the usual cinematic score.

In my experience, this type of sentiment comes from people whose only exposure to Hip-Hop music is the (admittedly terrible) garbage that's on the radio, or otherwise easily accessible. There is a WEALTH of incredible Hip-Hop music out there. Like everything else, you just have to be open to it.
I have some friends who are are well established in the Hip-Hop and Rap scenes [some more on the underground side of those] and it's easy to acknowledge the specificity of that kind of music making [I did some recordings for a DJ/MC - guitar and bass stuff mostly for him to use as loops/snippets in his creative process]. Nothing against the genre in itself; but, like I said previously, I wouldn't pick it to play on a Black Panther trailer. I feel it requires something more in tune with the reality of Wakanda and the character itself.
As a side note, although I felt amused that Black Sabbath's Iron Man was used as snippets in the Iron Man movie and trailer, I didn't quite like the AC/DC use at all. All I could think was "wait... where's BS's Iron Man?"
I listen to all types of music,and rarely from the radio. I think currently,hip hop and rap is at a real low.

In an era when all these people are a mouse click away, and tools to create/disseminate music are more simple/robust/powerful than EVER, there has NEVER been such a wealth of good stuff.
You just won't hear it on the radio. . .or in the bling-bling clubs. But who cares? That's Never been where the culture bubbled, really. Mass appeal is nice, but it's hardly a barometer for what's going on across the board.
Hahaha,you might be right, because I haven't heard of any of those. I rely on streaming music that let an algorithm pick the next song,and it's rarely outside of the mainstream. I'll have to check some of these out.

Not a fan of auto-tune as I prefer pure vocals that deliver raw emotion with power.
Soundtracks get wide play which tends to make a particular track 'popular' when tied to a particular scene or visual.
Kendrick is one of those artists that is interesting to me, because he clearly has a LOT of talent, but his music just doesn't do it for me. Given that, I'll be interested to see what he comes up with. . .worth checking for at the very least. Fingers crossed. . .
shareWhen you have to cite a list of totally obscure artists to justify a vibrant musical genre, that genre has shot it's wad already. Rap/Hip Hop was a revolution and vibrant for many years. Now nothing new of significance is produced. It happened to Rock and basically every other popular music ever created. Diehards will grope for any scraps to make a case that a musical form remains a relevant artistic force and deny that it has descended mainly into redundant, mass-marketed pap. One could list 20 obscure, currently existing rock bands and try to make the same case, and fail all the same. Hip hop persists mainly because of its stupidly simple bass rhythms and megalomaniacal posturing, which appeals to the undiscriminating herd at dance parties.

By definition, if people don't know then they are indeed obscure. If people know, they are not obscure.
I dig Monkey3 and SpaceSlug, but how many people know who they are? [probably the 2 or 3 random pot heads on their concerts]. They are indeed rather obscure even inside the Progressive/Space/Stoner genre. Happen to stumble upon them on a sub-sub-reddit post from years ago and found a couple of vids on youtube with a very low view count; even though they each have 4 or 5 albums released already.
And he is quite correct: Hip hop and Rap [and any subsequent no-need-to-study-music-because-reasons sub-genre that followed and is reliant on a computer with Bitwig or Fruity Loops [insert random Ebay edition here] installed and a cheap 2 octave midi keyboard plugged in] are extremely simple [it's part of their genesis, anyways. Those Roland XoX boxes guitar players would buy and then throw away because they were [and still are] very imperfect and limited for band use were picked up by the kids in the ghettos back in the day] and falls easily into cliches [as and example you see one of their clips, you see most of them all: black dude smoking a massive joint, posing gold necklaces and rings, surrounded by ass jerking chicks, driving a sports car while showing a pile of bills and talking and gesticulating to a camera. Meanwhile you hear words such as "uh-hu", "yeah", "nomesayin", "biatch", "whore", "hood", "gangasta","cops", "bullet", "kill", "white man/boy", "drugs", "party" ad nauseam because ... it's "poetry"... nomsayin'?].
Now this doesn't mean there aren't those inside a genre that can break away from those things and indeed create something interesting.
The problem here is that these aren't the 60's or the 70's anymore. People are not encouraged to try different things and studios aren't letting you use their recording rooms for free to experiment new techniques as it happened back then with bands such as Pink Floyd, Genesis and King Crimson. - continues -
In fact, ever since the mid 90's [and in some cases even mid 80's] a musician/band has to pay a great deal of money to use the recording studio room. Hence why PC based recording software and bedroom studios had such a boom in growth since the late 90's. Why pay for a recording room when you can do it in the comfort of your own bedroom.
A band will only go to a recording studio as a last resort. Many times the bands will come to a recording studio with most of their work already done, all is needed is remastering and some extra takes for fine tuning.
This implies that most people don't have the gear needed at their disposal [indeed, the price on musical instruments and gear is one of the most inflated in the world, to the point where for a slab of easily available piece of wood you can pay 4000 plus dollars just for the brand tag on it] and most of what they want to do is unavailable to them.
