Hammer Studios meets Ray Harryhausen

Despite all the cgi there is something distinctly creaky about this film. It just kept reminding me of the Hammer Studio historic films of the 60's that I watched on TV in the 70's. Throw in the beastie at the end, which moved like a Ray Harryhausen model, and there you have it - a thoroughly old fashioned (but not in a good way) film.

Are you saying you didn't enjoy the Hammer Films?

reply

Nope. I enjoyed most of them even though they often seemed low-budget and bit hammy. Actually it's been a while since I watched one and it would be interesting to see if they've acquired a patina of age that sometimes makes a film better. I have a theory that films roughly between 5 and 20 years old seem especially dated. After 20 years they slip beyond that window and you can appreciate them, or not, for what they are - either a good film or complete crap.

Haha...Agreed...I just have a special place in heart for crap like that.
