If one more lame wapanese otaku filth claims this is a ripoff....

....of Vampire Hunter D or Van Helsing, I'm going to kick them in the stomachs.

People are saying that? If anything the similarities are much akin to Berserk. Staggeringly infact, it was the thing I drew comparisons with when I watched Kane earlier today.

I thought it was like a dark van helsing type thing. VH rip off? certainly not! (where were the classic b-movie monsters?) but i'd say SK doffed it's puritan quaker's broad-brimmer to VH in terms of SK's monster/demon slayer style & darkly reluctant "anti-hero" almost. never have heard of this "berserk". any good?

Berserk is an awesome anime/manga series. Its one of my all time favorite stories (including books, movies, tv, comics, etc...) IMO its even better than Cowboy Bebop or Macross Plus (these are my 3 favorite anime series).

Berserk takes place in a medieval European type of setting. It chronicles the trials and tribulations of a band of mercenaries called the Band of the Hawk (especially its 3 best warriors Griffith, Guts & Casca). They're all commoners, but they have the grand goal of someday, somehow becoming nobles w/ their leader, Griffith, having the greater goal of someday becoming a king w/ his own kingdom to rule. Its a very dark, grim & gritty story w/ deep characterizations. Its not played for laughs like many anime/manga stories. Its filled with swords, knights, nobles, corpse-filled battlefields, assassinations, political intrigue, some rape (or rape attempts) and even some demons & other supernatural elements.

Be warned: the anime ends on a huge cliffhanger (its 25 eps). To find out the rest of the story you'll either have to do some web research or read the manga. But even still, I'd suggest buying or renting the anime 1st, (as the manga spoils a huge revelation early on) and then reading the manga if you want more.

PS - I thought Solomon Kane looked kinda cool, but w/ the Berserk comparison I'm now a little more interested. BTW I still say Van Hellsing heavily "borrowed" from Vampire Hunter D/VHD:Bloodlust (which itself "borrowed" the automatic crossbow idea from Berserk). Van Hellsing is nothing like the old Universal monster movies.

I didn't see any resemblance to Berserk other than the somber setting (but then again I saw very little Solomon Kane in it either).
For all that have not yet made aquaintance with Berserk I urge you to do it. Both the anime and the manga are great - the manga is far better though if I am to choose one (and the best manga out there as far as the mangas I have read). As for the anime goes, it's the second best anime ever made in my opinion (Ginga Nagareboshi Gin being #1).

I've been holding off on that urge since the first posters came out. The urge to kick has... never really subsided.

i'd say SK doffed it's puritan quaker's broad-brimmer to VH in terms of SK's monster/demon slayer style & darkly reluctant "anti-hero" almost.

It's actually the reverse: VH doffed its puritan quaker's broad-brimmer to SK. SK was created 82 years ago, and the look of Van Helsing in the film was heavily inspired by him.

The 1968 Vincent Price film, released forty years after Solomon Kane first appeared in Weird Tales magazine? Yes.

years ago. i was sorely tempted to copy it from the tv onto vhs video, but rsisted "officially" lol. i now own it on dvd after searching long & weary for it. found it by chance tucked away in a forgotten corner of a local Home Music Video store ;) & it is a god-damned work of genuine certified classic art

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Vampire Hunter D's creator Hideyuki Kikuchi is familiar with both Robert E. Howard and Michael Moorcock. D seems to owe as much to Elric and Hawkmoon as to Solomon Kane.

Otaku-Sempai is COOL. One of the smarter fans of anime out there! (no sarcasm, I respect his opinion's greatly).

Ehh, regardless of hat styles, Puritans and Quakers were never really the same thing at all. Nor Amish nor Mennonites either. Puritans never were pacifists, as far as I know. They were always fine with the general idea of going out and smiting the evil-doers who needed smiting.

Ozy

And I stood where I did be; for there was no more use to run; And again I lookt with my hope gone.

No you won't. You're too busy crying.

And 'wapanese'? Looks like your more than a little insecure. Need to call people names because they like things different than you? And also threaten violence? Be a man, as hard as that might be, but perhaps one day you might be forced to grow up.

Real otaku wouldn't make such a big deal out of Vampire Hunter D. It isn't very popular in Japan or considered all that great while series that have been butchered by U.S. releases like HnK are still very popular. Secondly someone who truly understands the nature of manga and anime would know its unashamedly derivative nature; if anything Vampire Hunter D was far more likely to have been inspired from Howard's Solomon Kane (they even made Famicom games based directly on the character that looked like this) than for this movie to have been inspired by Vampire Hunter D.

Look at all the Nerds whining that "John Carter" was a ripoff of Star Wars and Avatar. Its a losing battle.

If they were REAL Nerds they'd know what came first. Just saying ...
