How dumb? Why couldn't they...

What I can't get over that these inter-galactic cops could have come 50 years earlier and told us "Hey humans, you are destroying the world, we are a million years ahead of you, if you don't change your lifestyle, we'll come back in 50 years and make you extinct"?

The whole film is full of absurdities. Like the fact that the aliens apparently know so well how destructive humanity is, and even have an inside observer that klaatu talks to at McDonald's, yet he is sooo ignorant about the human nature that he has to see something extreme happen before doing anything about it.
Even consider what made him change his mind in the end. Supposedly it's seeing a mothers love to her adopted son (combined with few things before). Well, I am sure they'd expect parents would huddle with their children and love them. All animals do that out of instinct, not out of some intellectual epiphany.

If instead he'd have seen someone showing compassion to someone who doesn't desetve compassion or by endangering self to help someone, that would be easier to understand. Maybe it could have been people who save animals, compassionate doctors who are helping even the hopeless patients. That would be an indicator of complex acquired behavior.

Just such a dumb movie and wasted potential.

I don't think the "examples" you've cited mark this film as being "dumb".

I think this movie is a pretty effective remake of the original, which was a very good, low budget B&W film. It holds true to many of the major elements of the original, whilst updating the story from a nuclear threat to that of an ecological. Fair enough I reckon.

Yes, there is clearly a greater emphasis on special effects (again pretty much par for the course) and we have to suffer Jaden Smith, but I don't think this makes the film "dumb".🐭

Are you serious?

You DO realize if the aliens said that, all we humans will do is spend the next 50 years making the best and most destructive weapons to kill the aliens in the future.

Look at the world and look at how countries spend trillions on buying weapons just to protect themselves from muslims or some messed up country playing god.

Do you actually think that when faced with a threat of extinction, people will suddenly decide to save the environment instead of just designing better weapons to kill aliens with?

Who says they already didn't try that?
You ever heard of Area 51?
Eventhough it always has been denied by the US government some groups believe there's an alien corpse an/or ship on that specific area.
