If all wizards except the Prime Merlinean need their rings to cast magic

, then why doesn't Horvath take Balthazar's ring during one of the many times he has him at his mercy?

reply

Probably for the same reason that Balthazar didn't take Horvath's cane when he had *him* at his mercy. Propriety, maybe? As movie viewers, we know why (it would have made a much less interesting movie), but within the storyline itself, it does make sense that the sorcerers would disarm their opponents when they had the chance.

My latest theory is that sorcerers *can't* take an enemy's ring while that enemy is resisting, even if only mentally. The enemy has to be either unconscious or dead before he can be deprived of his ring.
That would explain why Horvath had to use Becky in order to get Dave to (sort-of) willingly give up his dragon ring.

What I want to know is why some sorcerers don't have rings. Balthazar said that a sorcerer needs his/her ring in order to use magic; however, Horvath had a sword (at the beginning of the movie) and a cane (the rest of the movie), Abigail had a pendant, and Sun-Lok had a metal girdle (I have no idea what that thing might be called). Why did they not have rings?

I have no enemies, but am intensely disliked by my friends.

reply

Because it's really about the gem, but Balthazar is probably inserting his personal bias and experience that rings are better than a cane/sword that you could lose or a girdle that would wouldn't be appropriate in ever situation.

The pendant wouldn't be so bad but guys don't tend to wear pendants like that...

reply

Is it the gem or the metal that's important? Horvath does have a ring as well, but neither Abigail nor Sun-Lok had an obvious gem.

reply

Hmm, I'll need to watch it again for Abigail, I think there must be a gem unless Exalibur was used to make other jewelry? Excalibur was a large sword the Dragon Ring is very small...

Sun Lok is wearing gems on both hands, technically, but I suppose if Excalibur worked, maybe metal that has already been used for magic can be turned into a ring or something else.

They also didn't KILL each other whenever either Balthazar or Hovarth got trapped. Numerous times. But whenever they fought they actually tried to kill each other, for example, Balthazar would have died if Dave hadn't stopped those daggers.
Probably rule of cool but when it happens so many times and so obviously I think they should give an explanation like "sorcerers can only kill each other when locked in a duel" and "a duel ends when a sorcerer is disarmed or rendered immobile" or something like this.
