Poe reference...

Anyone notice the reference to Cask of Amontillado? At about 55 minutes in, Christian Slater in his apartment or hotel room stands in front of a framed illustration of Fortunato from a 1919 reprint of the Poe story. Pretty cool but obscure.

I was just going to make a post myself about this. I noticed that as well. This story is basically a modern retelling of Poe's Cask of Amontillado. The "For the love of God" line at the end of movie cements that. No pun intended.......... well, maybe ;)

Welcome to 1993. $k has mentioned this was a retelling.

I was watching the movie as I read that, I looked up and it was the exact picture on the screen, very strange.

Oh dang I just started another thread on this topic not seeing yours. I'll post what I said here instead.

I know its kind of obvious but in case anyone didn't know, or notice I guess, this is very similar to Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado". That's one thing I like about King's stories is how he references other stories. Like in The Stand when he starts referencing The Raven with The Judge in the hotel room. Or the similarities to some scenes in Hamlet in Salem's Lot. I haven't actually read the story for Dolan's Cadillac yet so I don't know how similar this movie is to the story but I assume the being buried alive thing at least is the same. Looking forward to reading it.

Did you also notice that Dolan lived in a building called the "Montresor"?

i wrote a paper about this my sophomore year. Dolan's Cadillac IS King's version of Poe's The Cask of Amontillado. There are many similarities through out if you read both shorts. aside from King taking and changing around direct quotes from The Cask there is similarities in the theme of revenge and even down to the extremes in setting, such as the scorching heat of the desert and moldy dampness of the cellars. Also how each lure their victim using their weaknesses and desires
