That makes a lot more sense to me. It seems implied that her mother has been raising her on her own the whole time so I assumed the father was out of the picture from the beginning. However he was probably a director or other superior, which is why Nina's mother tells her not to "make the same mistake I did". Maybe not sexual assault but pressure from a more powerful person on an aging and increasingly desperate dancer.
