Apparently, the last two seasons were rushed...
...because Dumb and Dumber couldn't wait to start writing their stupid Star Wars trilogy.
This is just a rumour, but it would explain a LOT.

George R. R. Martin wanted a dozen (or more). Dumb and Dumber wanted less, and their egos won.

Apparently?
Hmmm... Apparently?
Yeah, that would explain a lot of things. George was hoping for 12, 13 seasons, which is what I was also expecting (around 10 seasons) when the show started, it was that good.
So the fantastic Season 6 ends, and then it's announced that Season 7 will have 7 episodes instead of 10.
It was at that moment that I knew things were very wrong at Double Dumb and HBO's house.
They said they needed 13 episodes to finish. It was HBO who decided to split into 2 seasons of 7 + 6. If they had the full 10 for season 7, I feel like it would have played much better. HBO does not want a season with just 3 episodes though. They need at least 5 for new subscribers to roll into the next month.
shareIs that really what happened? That sucks!
> If they had the full 10 for season 7, I feel like it would have played much better.
I have to say I don’t quite understand you here – why would "7 eps for season 7, 3 eps for season 8" played out better?
Oh, and one more thing: A friend told me that HBO asked them to shoot more episodes for the finale, but D&D declined. Is that true?
10 episodes for season 7. Episode 70 was the battle of winterfell and the season finale everyone expected.
Yes, they said after shooting season 6 they needed 13 episodes to finish the story.
Thanks!
But is it true that HBO asked them to shoot more than 13 episodes?
Yes. HBO would have been OK with them doing an infinite number of episodes, I think they wanted at least 20 more for 2 full seasons. This was after GRRM told them the ending and they had the end game for the show mapped out. Another problem with logistics was that the stuff they could shoot concurrently in past seasons was getting less and less because the characters were coming together. They still ended with 2 production units, but had 3 or 4 going at one point during the run. HBO basically was asking them to do a bunch of filler episodes.
shareIt was as if they were Dads telling us an amazing bedtime story, then they look at their watches and realize we should have been asleep long ago and Mom is going to be P-Oed, so they end it like this: "And-then-they-killed-the-evil-witch-and-everyone-lived-happily-ever-after-the-end-now-get-to-sleep-good-night."
shareHah! That’s exactly how the last two seasons felt.
“But, what about the Dragon, daddy?..”
“It...it just flew away...”
“Where did it go?..”
“Umm..Bran can warf into him. He’ll find him later.”
“If he can do that, than why didn’t, Brandon...”
“Go to sleep.”
