Do they even need a Night's Watch now?

There are no White Walkers anymore, and the wildlings and the Night's Watch are allies. What are they going to do all day, just hunt for rabbits?

reply

Jon can't be King, he's a Targaryen and prone to madness like Dany was, and the power would be too tempting. And besides, he's a Queenslayer now.

reply

Maybe they just need a dumping ground for misfits. If it was not for the Night's Watch they would have to put Jon Snow in prison or execute him. That Grey Worm turned out to be as bad as Denarys ... I used to really like that poor guy.

All in all it was a fairly decent finale. How else could it have ended?

The other question is how they they fix that massive hole in the wall caused by the zombie-dragon?

reply

They could have made the ending, I don't know...a bit more thrilling maybe? They played it quite safe really, and I'm not sure overall how I feel about it. I didn't like the idea of Jon going back to the Night's Watch after his point about dying for them, but perhaps he is with the wildlings now. The one thing I thought was done well was Brienne writing in the book for Jaime. That was a nice touch.

reply

Yes, Brienne telling Jaime's story in the history book was beautiful and moving.

reply

Sam should have been the historian ... why was Brienne doing that?

reply

Because it was more fitting for her character to do so, seeing as she knew most of all what his good deeds were.

reply

It was kind of stupid, as look a the US Military and how they treat women in the service. Just today they found out sailors were maintaining a rape book on women on the ships.

reply

Why would you want to apply what goes on in the US military to this fantasy show?

I had no problem with her writing in it, and even if it was decreed that Sam should be the one that writes in it, and she broke a law by doing so, I still wouldn't really have a problem with it.

reply

Because it is the Duty of the Lord Commander of the Kings guard to write those pages. Not some Maester.

It was Brienne's job alone.

reply

Because she's a WOMAN, and she was a better fighter than Jaime, and now she's a better writer than Sam. Probably she would be better sailor than Seaworth, and a better commander than Tywin, not to say taller than everyone else.

This is how it works nowadays.

LOL

The wall came down at East watch, they were at castle black

reply

THERE IS NO NIGHT WATCH. That was all a ruse to save Jon’s life. As soon as he got to Castle Black the escort guards set him free to go live with his bro Tormund and his late love Ygritte’s people, the ones he bonded with and was a hero to.

reply

good post. there were even a few nice looking ladies lookin at jon, sort of hinting he will find love and make all the babies he wants living with his friends there

reply

To keep the peace in the region north of the Wall. Sansa is queen of the North Kingdom so I suppose it makes sense to continue the Night's Watch as a watchful guard to keep the North secure and the Freefolk free and free to choose their own destiny.

reply

Well... they don't but.... let's assume that the Great Other is pretty much alive and well and can create some new white walkers any time soon!

reply

Really?

Thousands of years have passed since the last White Walkers attack. People believed them as a myth or children tales. But the Night's Watch continued to exist all those years, diminishing with the decades, but stayed. Anyone could have thought that after centuries of nothing happening there and the lack of any danger for a thousand years, why to keep the Watch. Well it was this diminished Watch that detected the White Walkers and noted the army of the death. Without this Watch the living wouldn't have been prepared and everything had been lost.

Now, you will argue that the Night King and his armies were defeated for good. But, did they????? We do not know (I am sure not even Bran) if the Children created more of these Kings or more With Walkers, we just don't know. Also, they just saw things they didn't believe in: Giants, Mammuts, living Dragons and others (most of them coming from beyond the wall). Why not keep a watch in that wall? It will be stupid, greatly stupid not to have one.... Also, remember what Tyrion told Jon, we still need a place where to send bastards, criminals, rapist and so...

reply

I agree that in essence it's like the GOT's version of a men's prison, but that aside it doesn't serve much of a purpose now. The way the show has depicted the story of the White Walkers and the Night King, I would say that they've been wiped out. We learnt that the NK was created by the Children and he was destroyed along with his minions. And the wildlings are much scarcer in numbers than they used to be and pretty much allies with the rest of the north. The Wall has little reason for existing.
