‘Game of Thrones Season Premiere Pirated 54 million Times in a Day’

Unknown if this is accurate.

Data published by piracy monitoring firm MUSO suggests that the season opener of Game of Thrones was pirated 54 million times in the first 24 hours. Unauthorized streaming services were most used, while torrent downloads were good for roughly ten percent of the total. Most pirates come from India, followed by China and the United States.

For comparison, HBO’s official, or legitimate, viewing numbers add up to just 17.4 million.

Hey if you make viewers have to pay a monthly fee just to see one show, hell yes people are gonna pirate it. So many people pay monthly for just ONE streaming service, we ain't gonna pay for netflix, hulu, HBO, Amazon Video, etc.

So hell yeah. Download that stuff for free. Proudly.

reply

Oh, bullshit.

I subscribed to HBO Now yesterday, and I'll cancel the day of the GoT finale. This is a great value for fifteen bucks. I can watch a few movies that I missed, catch up on the second season of Vice Principals, the third season of True Detective, and the second season of Barry.

Thankfully streaming services do not (yet) have cancellation fees. I subscribe to Netflix once or twice a year, Amazon once a year, and Hulu can go fuck itself. I downloaded torrents of GoT for the second season, and streamed it from a now-defunct site after that. However, as soon as HBO offered the subscription service, I'd sign up for a month and then promptly cancel. If this option is not available to people in certain countries, then I'd certainly understand, but for Americans there's no great excuse.

reply

Or you can just, like, watch everything for free.

reply

If everyone did that, the studios would collapse and there would be no more movies or TV shows.

They're not going to make shit if they don't get paid for it.

Agreed.

I used to be a torrent user but have since given it up to walk the straight and narrow. Like you, I have subscribed to HBO NOW just for GoT.

'...Most pirates come from India, followed by China and the United States...'
Not accurate then. Should be '540 million Times in a Day’

reply

They didn't say every person in India downloaded it!

In China they censor all kinds of stuff. The nudity, the graphic violence, for some bizarre reason they don't like to show dead bodies (not sure if zombies count), but Chinese fans who want to see the complete show as it airs on HBO have no choice but to go with BT.

Frankly, I don't get it. A communist country with a government not based on religion. Why do they bother censoring non-political content?

reply

I know people who have legally subscribed to HBO but couldn't watch the show live because its streaming service was overloaded. I wouldn't be surprised if a few illegal downloaders were upset subscribers.

reply

Happens every episode. You would think HBO would have upgraded their servers to handle the load.

But I guess it's like power companies and these constant outages, they just figure people don't have much choice but to accept the situation.

reply

Except there is a choice.

Most of the illegal streams and downloads are happening because of high cable fees. People are illegally streaming cable and GOT ends up added into the mix.

BTW, I just found out that episode 2 is now available.

reply

I heard. I also heard episode 2 is another filler episode when there is only 5 more in the series.

More bullshit spewed by HBO.

So they are going to settle things in the North and the South in 4 episodes? Pfft.

reply

"The main goal for HBO is to, eventually, convert these pirates into paying customers. They are some of the most passional consumers after all."

Some will eventually buy GOT books, DVDs or other merchandise.

reply

Good. F*ck HBO!

reply

Only 10% on torrents? That's kind of sad. I'd assume the unauthorized streaming services would be crap quality.

reply

Cool
