I do this same thing when I rent DVD's. Regular mainstream DVD's , not porn. LOL!
I am a bit of a germaphobe, but sometimes I rent a movie, and there is this icky, greasy, unidentifiable substance on the disk. It can eff up the play back too, so you have to clean it off.
I know everyone likes to eat while watching a movie, but is it so difficult to wash or wipe your hands before handling something that doesn't belong to you anyway.
The first time she did it I was like what is she doing, then when she took them off I realized why. That is too funny. Kinda like how I open the door leaving the restroom I use a paper towel

I think this was to protect the DVDs from fingerprints, not to protect them from germs. In a later scene, she was handling one of the boxes without the bags.
I had a friend who used to clean VHS players in a porn store -- that was his actual part-time job -- and now I am wondering if it required gloves like Ritter was doing.

She puts on the gloves because the DVDs were *figuratively* dirty, not literally. She finds the subject matter anathema to her--but she has to keep reliving it because her mind cannot process and find closure on the damage she suffered.

I use to work at Blockbuster and for the first 3 months my job was to pull the boxes out of the drop box, open the cases, checking the disc, and then check them in! My hands were always gross! I've handled over 3 million dvd boxes! its gross!

Anzerion that is exactly what I thought and also, think about it, what did she do while she was watching those movies? Before she puts the gloves on she washes her hands. Besides just the movies being dirty in nature, I think that she felt the people before her that had watched them were also dirty and sick and she didn't want them on her.

Despite the obvious metaphor here.. that they are "dirty" in both physical and mental aspects....
I tend to believe that is is a good practice. She is applying the plastic just before she is masturbating..thus preventing unwanted germs on her private parts.
Later on when he is handing the movies..she is shown touching them without the plastic..but just before that she complained about not being able to masturbate with him there watching.
She & him ..after-all are handling the cases to and from the store without the plastic.
