Hahaha, I almost forgot Robert Downey Jr. is actually white

Did this happen to anyone else when watching the movie?

This is where Hollywood is completely hypocritical.

On one hand, if anyone blackfaces, it is considered "racist" and the person is treated with utter contempt and worse than Hitler.

However, RDjr does it in "Tropic Thunder", and not only is there no outrage, but the politically correct Academy, who spent one Oscars night dolling out awards to blacks to show how progressive they are, still gave Downey jr an Oscar nomination (not that he isn't a good actor), for looking like a racial stereotype.

You dont get it. The movie pokes fun at the celebrities that try to be all political correct but in the end come off racist

reply

It's not hypocritical at all. RDJ isn't "doing blackface" in this movie. The character he's playing is. It's an important distinction.

And he got the nomination because he played this role extremely well. He is acting his ass off every single second he's on screen whether he's delivering lines or just doing stuff in the background. He's never just standing there.

True! The movie is poking fun at method actors who take themselves too seriously. Terrific character Lincoln Osiris or Kirk Lazarus. (Take your pick.)🐭

reply

Agreed. No one is b!tching when great, heterosexual actors play gay men or women. Nobody threw a fit when Robin Williams played gay in Birdcage. In fact, he was so much more convincing (with the few stereotypes they included) than Heath Ledger. No one b!tched at the very straight Sean Penn for his performance in Milk. Ironically, he's now with Charlize who brilliantly played a murderous lesbian in Monster... and won Best Actress. Care to explain why black people have to be so insecure and get so uppity at the idea of a white man trying to play a black man??

reply

It's called satire. Is the joke on black people or on pretentious actors who couldn't be less self-aware?

You're a fcking idiot. RDJ didn't play a black guy. He played a white Australian guy.

If you can read this then you are trying too hard.

Your comment tells me that you went full retard.

He was awesome in the role. The best black man performance ever done by a white man. Remember Soul Man? That was awful. After so long, I could barely recognize Robert.

reply

I went through that with him another time he played Australian, way back when he did Natural Born Killers. I saw it so many times that I just thought of him as Australian, to the point where I would forget that he wasn't, or wonder if I'd just been wrong all this time thinking he was American. Talk about disappearing into a role.

For a dollar, name three white people. . .

His acting is flawless in this movie, not to mention hilarious as ****

Or blonde and blue-eyed. One really has to check what he really looks like after having watched this movie. Hilarious.

After Lazarus loses the "black face" for the rest of the film, it's so hard to wrap your head about that it's still the same guy, lol. And not just because of the makeup, RDJ skillfully created two very different people.

RDJ was awesome.
